What if FOUR died?

I have finished the book.. so spoiler alert!

Did anyone else consider if the book would have been better or worse if Tobias was the one who died?

How do you think you would feel differently than you do now?

I for one would have been devastated I really grew to like Four throughout the books. He is one of my favorite characters. I think Tris was harder to relate to, for me, and so I think I would have been more upset with Four dying. I also think Tris death is sad but doesn't alter my views of the book so much where as if Four died I think it would have been to much.

Honestly, I didn't really like Four since Insurgent. I thought he was very selfish and didn't respect Tris as he claimed he did. In the end, I feel that Four got what he wanted from the get-go. His mother.

I cannot say whether or not the ending would have change for me if he died instead, but it would have been more acceptable for me. Tris' death (for me) seems like it didn't really mean a thing except for that her friends and neighbors lived while she gave every part of her and got nothing. The impact of her death was so insignificant because it only changed "Chicago". I feel she got cheated in the end, while others (Four and Caleb) got rewarded.

Overall, it was a good read, but I would have liked to see her death having more meaning on a larger scale. If that happened, I think my disappointment in the ending would have been lessened.

I think Tris would have gone crazy. I thought Four would die though. I wonder how everything would play out if he died and she survived. But if they both survived, there would be more to the story. I think that the way things did play out, was perfect. Most authors stray away from the actual point of the plot and stuff. VR stayed on track for the most part.

hi

if ur there say hi riley

memi will u be my friend?

If Four died that is just sad. he is my fav character

She would have never killed off Four. I think she thought a revolt would happen. I don't think she really thought the backlash of this magnitude would happen. In her blog VR tries to explain herself. no self respecting author would do that. but she has a movie franchise to think of. anyway on her blog said she loved Tris. What a sweat way to show she whacked her! Oh and that was always what she planned to do with the character. And here I thought Caleb was an ass.

throughout this series i kept thinking of Tris as this strong heroine who yes did things sometimes recklessly but always with good intention. i think that there were possibilities for the story if she hadn't been the one to die, but that's not where Ms. Roth decided to take us.

i wonder what the future would have held for everyone had she survived. would she have gone back to Chicago to make things better or would she have branched out to the other parts of the country to see what she could do to improve things.

i think that's the problem with having her survive v. Four though. we know that he's stay put and live his life, but with Tris, there would have to be more to come and i think that maybe veronica roth didn't want to go down that path.

I'm inclined to agree with Roth's explanation for the reason why Tris died and why Four got the ending he did. Tris' journey in the book was to figure out what selflessness meant to her- she struggled with this from the very first chapter of Divergent- and also to reconcile her parents' sacrifice for her. Four, on the other hand, needed to come to terms as best as he could with his difficult past. He needed to change how he saw and felt about himself and to move past what Marcus did to him. If Four died, he never would have accomplished any of that, which I think would have been really tragic. He would have died at a time in his life when he was still grappling with whether or not he was "damaged" and he never would have been able to put Marcus behind him. He also potentially wouldn't have had a chance to confess to Zeke and Hana, which is another major thing he needed to do. Basically, he never would have developed fully as a character, so Four never would have been the one to die. It just wouldn't have made sense in his character arc.
