A Severed Head - this was just, wow. So outrageous I'm not sure if it's meant to be taken seriously or as a sort of madly f****d up allegory. There was more bed swapping going on than in a Playboy mansion.

Finished The Iron Heel by Jack London. I didn't love the writing, and obviously the technology is 100 years out of date, but read it on serial reader which made it manageable. However, this election cycle this felt relevant :(
Just finished reading
The Wasp Factory by Iain BanksI did enjoy it, but I'm not sure I think it belongs on the list. I am impressed he got it published in 1984. Of course, he did publish it in the UK. Wonder how hard it was to get it published here in the US?
Just finished Fingersmith. I really liked it! Such characters and plot twists! I'm not entirely sure why I needed to read this book before I died, but I'm glad I did!

Middlesex - Very enjoyable although it wasn't what I was expecting. There was more focus on family and US history and less on genetics.4 stars
Everything Is Illuminated - After I got about 1/4 into this novel, I was always eager to read more of it. I listened to it on audio ebook, and enjoyed listening to the Ukranian-accented character who told the modern part of the story, and found I developed a lot of empathy for him.

I read this for a book group read and i don't think anybody had a bad word to say. I really liked it - 4 stars i think and i don't rate all that many books that highly.
Finally finished Walden by Henry David Thoreau. I liked the first half of the book very much: How and why he lived in the wood alone and self-suppliyng for two years. The second half was.... I don't know,... maybe I did not understand it. He take a lot of detours in his writing. Struggling my way trough the last part I came to the concluding chapter at last and were delighted to find it crystal clear and full of quotes I already knew – just not that where from here. For example:
"If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer."
3 stars. The start was almost 5 star.
I just finished
Under the Net by Iris Murdoch. I really enjoyed it. However, I do have trouble verbalizing just what it is about Iris Murdoch I enjoy so much.
Just finished Excellent Women by Barbara Pym. If it had not been on the list then I would probably never have picked it up and I'm still not sure that I would have missed out on something.
Finished The Country Girls by Edna O'Brien, a very gentle and easy read. I remember reading some O'Brien many years ago, but don't think this was ever one of them. 4/5
I read Foundation - a far future where apparently women have the same participation in society as they used to have back in the 1700s and Santa Evita which was very unusual. It's listed as fiction but I have classified it as non-fiction.Rated 4 stars and 3 stars respectively.
Ah yes, a society where women know their place... and everybody is probably white and heterosexual too. LOL!

I did like it a lot. Great sense of place and time (a poor section of Cairo in the early 1940s). Great character development, too. I have read three other books by him that I have also really enjoyed (The Cairo Trilogy).

Glad to hear you enjoyed it. I am planning to read this one soon.

Finished The Red Queen by Margaret Drabble. Very disappointing. I am not sure why it ever became a list book.
Fight Club - The movie was actually better. I think the only book to movie conversion I have ever said that for before now is The Devil Wears Prada. It's not that the book is bad, it's great, it's just that the movie is tighter, better scripted and both the ending and the 'big reveal' is better done. More surprising and more dramatic.
3 1/2 stars

But that one's not on the list. He has one other book listed however, Choke.

Finally made it to the end of Daniel Deronda. Not my favourite Eliot. It is my 100th book from the 19th century though, so I'm feeling chuffed with myself today.
Just finished Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe. As i had read the summarized edition of this book which had been prepared for child in my childhood, i did not interested to go and read it whole book again. But I really enjoy . He has nothing in this island except hope for living and with this hope he could survive there for 30 years alone.

Oh yes, it's on the g1000 list. They're side by side on my spreadsheet. I ticked off the wrong column.
Ian wrote: "Finally made it to the end of Daniel Deronda. Not my favourite Eliot. It is my 100th book from the 19th century though, so I'm feeling chuffed with myself today."I really liked half of it. That novel was really two stories squished together.
Finished In the Heat of the Day today. Would someone please explain how we know about Harrison plan for Stella? I have other questions but don't want spoilers in my comments. Good book but somethings just were too "hidden".
Just finished #160- The Garden Where the Brass Band Played by Simon Vestdijk. Liked it...seemed Proustian to me. If you know more about classical music than me...you might enjoy this even more.
Just completed for the week ending 9/11:Great Expectations by Charles Dickens
The Vicar of Wakefield by Oliver Goldsmith
The Mysteries of Udolpho - interesting story at bottom but I got sick of excessive scenery and the drip of a 'hero'. The poetry was also awful beyond my words to describe but I just fast forwarded through it as soon as it started so I can't say it really annoyed me.2 1/2 stars
