Clarissa | 5 comments Trying to find this to surprise a friend, so I don't have all the details. The book is or was made into a TV show in the last 10 years. It was a YA book from a girl's perspective. I think it was a series. The book was much more sex-focused than the TV show. There is an audio book version, although that probably doesn't help much. I thought possibly Vampire Diaries, but I have no idea how much of a sex-focus the main character has.

Nathalia | 64 comments Did the book/show have a supernatural element to it? Was the show successful?

message 3: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 1527 comments Could it have been The Secret Circle (which is by the same author as the Vampire Diaries)? It's about a group of teenagers with supernatural powers. It's been adapted for TV and there is also an audiobook available.

I read the book series as a teenager and remember it being a bit "sexy" (I was only about 12 though so maybe it just seemed that way)! Haven't seen the TV show so I can't comment on how it compares.

message 4: by SparksofEmber (new)

SparksofEmber | 957 comments Also, The Nine Lives of Chloe King was made into a series but got canceled after one season. I don't know how sex-focused the book is but I remember something about her not being able to kiss her human boyfriend or risk killing him.

message 5: by Sally (new)

Sally (sastevens) | 46 comments As a big LJ Smith fan I would say this probably isn't Vampire Diaries or Secret Circle as the books don't have much of a focus on sex. Kissing is about as much as you'll find in them. Although the shows do take it farther from what I've seen(which isn't much).

Do you know anything else about plot or genre?

message 6: by Clarissa (last edited Oct 01, 2013 11:50PM) (new)

Clarissa | 5 comments I would guess sci-fi/fantasy. I'll try to pry for more info, without letting on what I'm doing. Thanks so much for the help!

eta: It definitely is more than a single book, and it's not Vampire Diaries, because he already read that one. There is some quote comparing feeling turned on to feeling like you need to pee (from the main girl's perspective.)

message 7: by Kiwigirlreads (new)

Kiwigirlreads | 5 comments Roswell the TV series was based on a series of books with the same name by Melinda Metz. Not sure about the sex though as I think it was pretty PC but I only read the first few books in the series.

message 8: by Christie (new)

Christie | 152 comments I don't know how much sex the series had in it, but there was the Private series by Kate Brian. It was made into a web series that then was made into a movie (I do believe that's how it went and I think I saw the movie on Netflix.)

message 9: by Kiwigirlreads (new)

Kiwigirlreads | 5 comments I guess there is always Gossip Girl too if you are going in that direction rather than supernatural type of stuff and more recently the Pretty Little Liars series by Sara Shepherd but that might be a bit to new from the sound of the original post.

message 10: by Clarissa (new)

Clarissa | 5 comments Hmmm... yeah, I'm becoming sad as I realize I probably don't have enough information to figure it out. Thanks all for the help, though! If we figure it out, I'll let you know. :)

Clarissa-bump this once a month or so, and we'll all keep trying to figure out what it is.

If you hadn't been so sure that it was a YA, I'd have suggested The Dresden Files and/or Blood Ties files. Storm Front for the first Dresden book and Blood Price for the first of the Blood books.

IMDB link for Blood Ties is http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0808013/?...

and the link for Dresden is http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0486657/?...

message 13: by Clarissa (new)

Clarissa | 5 comments The biggest hint I have is that my friend (who is a guy) is embarrassed that he's reading it. And that it was YA. But that does remind me, Ann, that I want to read The Dresden Files.

message 14: by Railyn (new)

Railyn (funky-rat) | 243 comments While neither were YA books, both Sex In The City and the Tales From The City were made into TV adaptations and both heavily focus on sex. I was never a Sex In The City fan, but my husband and I both LOVED Tales Of The City (which aired as several miniseries on PBS and Showtime).

The Carrie Diaries

Tales of the City

The Carrie Diaries is actually YA - takes place in Carrie's senior year of high school.

And it's also a TV show on the CW.

message 16: by Railyn (new)

Railyn (funky-rat) | 243 comments Ok. I did not know that. Then maybe that's the answer. That's what popped up when I searched "Sex In The City".

Clarissa, are you still looking for this?

Why do you consider Dresden Files and Blood Ties not young adult? Most series mentioned here have little or no sex (ok, I have not read the Dresden Files) and I would consider them to be appropriate for teenagers, say beginning from age 12, and I am 48 and still read this stuff.
All the LJ Smith books mentioned have little to no sex, and also the Nine Lives of Chloe King, while there is a certain danger to kissing and they certainly think about having sex, there is none, as far as I remember. Still good books though, but probably not the answer to the search.

Alicia | 37 comments Ingo wrote: "Why do you consider Dresden Files and Blood Ties not young adult? ..."

YA is not usually defined by whether teenagers can read it without encountering sex, but whether it contains teenagers and young adults as primary characters and, to a certain extent, concerns the coming of age or issues facing young people. The Dresden Files focuses on a character in his 30s, does not have those sorts of coming of age issues at the centre and has some pretty damn steamy sex scenes in some of the books.

That one is DEFINATELY not a YA Darkenrhal. There are some very steamy scenes in that one--and later in the series there's a lot of violence.

Ah, alright, thanks for clearing that up, maybe I am not alone thinking I am not sure, what YA really is - the suggestion of Charlaine Harris (for me Sookie is the right age, after school, young etc.) could be a joke, but I would count that as YA.
And it sounds like I should read Dresden Files, after watching the TV-Series I was not sure, it was ok, but not too good, I read the books where different, but not in what direction.

Just to make a point, for me an adult is someone who can vote (in our country that would be 18), so young adult I would say is 18-25. Sex and violence are for me no hints wether something is or is not YA, both in fiction and non-fiction I have seen children and teenagers kill and act cruel (The Girl Next Door inspired by a real case comes to mind, but you would probably not call that YA).

Definitely not - for one thing, I think Sookie is 27, and generally YA as a fiction demographic is more 15-21, and focused on the teenage years, rather than 18-25. And they largely lack the emotional experiences that are common to YA fiction. Although Sookie does have her first serious relationship, her friends are getting married, having babies, caring for older family members and generally behaving like competent, mature adults, which are not really the issues usually handled in YA. Making casseroles to take to your friend who just got out of hospital is not YA.

Sex and violence can definitely be traits of young people, and can also be seen in YA novels, but it is *how* they are handled and whether the novels are specifically marketed to a teenage audience that really makes the difference.

Holly (hollylovesbooks) | 759 comments Here are a few YA series that have been made into tv shows:

Gossip Girl (there's a bit of sex in here - if I had to guess, I'd guess this is the one your friend is looking for?)
Pretty Little Liars
The Lying Game
The Awakening (first book in the Vampire Diaries)
The Initiation (first book in the Secret Circle)
The Carrie Diaries
The Nine Lives of Chloe King

Please chill. Your comment did not cause any trouble. Just because someone responds emphatically to you doesn't make you a trouble-causer.

☯DαякєηRнα Sorry if you took what I typed the wrong way. The problem with using a written as opposed to a spoken form of communication is--subtext doesn't translate. I will admit to almost falling out of my chair laughing at your suggestion of Sookie. I had thought you were just following my suggestions for "if you hadn't said YA" ideas.

And don't stop commenting. Just because I'm having an off day (or someone else is) you should just remember what I said about the subtext. (Although trolls are fairly obvious, and with them the subtext is nonexistent)

☯ DαякєηRнαℓ ❛ ᶜʳᵒᵘᶜʰᶤᶰᵍ ʰᵘᵐᵃᶰ ; ʰᶤᵈᵈᵉᶰ ᵗᶤᵗᵃᶰ ❜ (darkhearteternal) | 856 comments Oh okay. Sorry too. I was having a really bad day myself. Though I liked Sookie lol. And honestly, I am not so into books to bother with young adult or fiction or paranormal or whatever, a book is a book to me with a story and that's pretty much it. And from what the description was, Sookie was my best guess. Thanks for taking the time to type that, it's really appreciated.
