Brenda Clough (brendaclough) A foundational work of the genre!

Leslie | 1664 comments I have read these already but I got them in audiobook form this summer (from SYNC) so I guess that I will 'reread' them by listening to this. I will also be reading The Valley of Fear for another group, if anyone wants to double up their Holmes reading!

Poornima | 46 comments Leslie, would like to join you in reading "Valley of fear" once am done with "Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" !

Valerie Brown I read (and enjoyed!) The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes not long ago. I think I'll read the Valley of Fear along with Leslie and Poornima - somehow that one is not on my bookshelf!!

Stephanie (quiltsrme) Turns out that I have this audiobook already! I also had it from Sync. I've only ever read Hound of the Baskervilles, so this will be a good read to see what made him popular in the first place.

Leslie | 1664 comments I will be starting The Valley of Fear in a few days (or maybe a week). I will set up a thread for the buddy read in case anyone wants to start sooner.

BTW, I am enjoying the audiobook of The Adventures... so far.

Anyone have a favorite story? least favorite?

I like "A Scandal in Bohemia" mainly because it has Irene Adler in it! But for the plot, I think my favorite is either "The Red Headed League" or "The Engineer's Thumb".

I also liked "A Scandal in Bohemia". Irene Adler is such an interesting and memorable character, almost feminist in her assertions--even if she is a criminal. I also liked "The Boscombe Valley Mystery", but especially "The Man with the Twisted Lip" and "The Red-Headed League" for offering creative examples of the societal problems of employment and identity fraud, problems we still face today.

Ooo I like all of these but it's while since I've read them. Mostly I'm remembering the dramatisations I think, so I'm really looking forward to rereading it next week - next on my list :)

Is "Belgravia the one where she's nude?

Marianne Williams I have just finished reading The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and found all of the stories to be quite innovative. A Scandal In Bohemia was the best.

Poornima | 46 comments Just finished reading this! .
Enjoyed the below ones most:
- Scandal in Bohemia (for Sherlock having met his match)
- Adventure of the blue carbuncle (for the literal goose chase!)
- Adventure of the speckled band (nice setting for the mystery)
- Adventure of the Engineer's thumb (this had very interesting plot)
