What makes a HORRIBLE protagonist?

I read forest of teeth and hands and so many people slaughtered the protagonist and thought she was selfish...blah blah. I didn't get that overwhelming feeling at all. I pitied her.

Any thoughts on prior reads, on what makes a horrible protagonist?

- my thought is if the reader simply can't relate to the protagonist, they knit pick about everything

The worst leading character for me was from:

Plague Zone

At the beginning of the zombie apocalypse, he sees his wife and son on a TV news feed, being killed by a zombie. He recognizes the zombie as a neighbor, so then proceeds to cross the country and get home so he can kill that particular zombie.

Ridiculous. I kept hoping he would die so a more interesting leading character could arise...
