Hi, again. Thanks for the welcome. Well, another reason it takes me so long to answer is that when I bought this computer, the guy told me that it was the cheapest one he had and I forgot to ask why!!!Anyhow, I'm thinking of starting a little publishing company here in Italy, which is extremely complicated so I don't have too much hope.
I want to write a book of English grammar for Italians. Any ideas? I was going to start with typical mistakes that Italians make.
Sonali, have you read any English classics in English? Italian translators don't do such a good job translating English to Italian. One of these days I'm going to collect some distasters that I've found in guide books and stuff.
Your questions are out of my knowledge, Rosabeatrice. Hopefully someone who has the knowledge will stop by.
I am sorry Rosabeatrice, can't help you with the typical mistakes Italians make. I know the ones my country men make. It depends on the syntax and peculiarities of every language. Yes I have read lots of classics since I'm a post - graduate in English Literature and have been an English teacher for the past 31 years. :-)
Welcome Rosabeatrice.....where in Italy are you? I will be in the northern regions for a week or so in September....I am so looking forward to visiting Firenze.
Hi, Debbie. I spent the day running around in circles trying to get information to start a little publishing house so, at this point, I'm slightly bread-dead. (Oops, I mean brain-dead!)Anyway, I'm in Viterbo, a small city about 2 hours north of Rome.
I was in Fienze for about 3 weeks about 20 years ago. It's a lovely place.

I liked bread dead better LOL!
Hi, Sonali. I just can't get the hang of these groups and forums and all that stuff. I keep clicking on what looks to me like your reply but your message doesn't come up.Anyway, you make an excellent point, even if indirectly. That is, you say you know the mistakes your fellow countrymen make in English but not those made by Italians. That's becaue, as you would know, when we speak our second language, we're trying to speak it in our first language.
For example, an Italian would say: Conosco bene l'italiano. Then, when he tries to say it in English, he says I know well the Italian.
If you know a few languages, you can guess the native language of someone who's speaking his second language, just by the kinds of mistakes he makes.
I wish I had more times for sites like this. I really love anything having to do with grammar and I appreciate having people to talk to about it.

Rosebeatrice , after the comment , on the right hand side there is a reply button, hit it and a portion of her comment will appear in the comment box, then add your comment and post it.

Okay, Carol. I clicked on the reply button on the right hand side after your comment. Is this what I'm supposed to get? I keep thinking I should get your comment. But mine comes up and not even all of it.
Anyway, thanks for your help.
Now I need to know how I can get these messages to always start with the latest. I get confused very easily.
Thanks!
Hello all. My name is Dianne, I'm in an age bracket it's no longer fun to talk about, and I live on the east coast of Canada, in what we call the "maritime" provinces. I've been posting reviews on Goodreads for a couple of years but somehow missed ever seeing this group. Today I noticed a topic inviting people to post great sentences found in books and I almost swooned (almost, I'm not really the swooning type). I can't count the number of times I've been stopped short by an amazing sentence and have had no one to tell (my husband is not a reader). Then, when I saw this topic was just one in a group called Language and Grammar, two of my favourite words, I felt like I'd come home. This is going to be fun!
Welcome Dianne....looking forward to hearing more from you....we are pretty fond of this place too :-)
OMG! How have I never seen this group before? HOW??? I was checking out the topics, wondering if I should join this awesome-sounding group, and saw topics like "Amazing sentence I just read" and "Word associations," and I'm like, "OMFG, they sing the song of my people!"You mean there really do exist people who are in love with grammar and technical aspects of writing as much as I am? *tear*
Happy to be here!
It has been a very long time since I stopped in since I went back to school and started a new job. I graduated in May and celebrated with a trip to Italy. I'm glad to see some familiar faces and some friendly new ones.
Welcome Delena and Welcome back, Summer. I'm a little sad to see the summer (lower case) ending. School bells can be heard in the near distance....
