Diane wrote: "The Mill on the Floss by George Eliot."I've read and loved almost all of her books; Middlemarch is one of my favorite books of all time. For some reason, though, Mill on the Floss just didn't connect with me. Wishing you better luck than I had with it! :)
Cphe wrote: "Cold Comfort Farm" When you're done, look for the 1995 movie with Ian McKellan. Perfectly cast and absolutely hilarious!

I'm 3/4 through it now. It seems to alternate between very good and dull.

... Trollope is a great writer and worth the indulgence..."I've only read Phineas Finn (a few times) and can't wait to read the rest of the series. Plus, I'll read PF again!
Just started The Shipping News and I like it so far. It took me a while to get used to her writing style, which consists largely of fragments.

Ooh, I hope you take it a little at a time. Or is it better to read faster to get it over?

I'm starting The Drowned and the Saved by Primo Levi. Essays inspired by/based on his experiences in WW2 concentration camps.
Maybe we should read lighter books next Christmas, Mercedes?

I ordered that one myself and am very eager to get into it as If This Is a Man/The Truce both impressed me greatly.

Hey, teammate! I've been so looking forward to reading that book -- NOT! Anybody else get a little embarrassed checking some of these books out of the library? I have to get a lot of the Boxall books through InterLibrary Loan so I know all of the librarians quite well and am a little hesitant checking these out in person!!

I checked this book out from the library as well. I remember feeling very apprehesive about it and what the librarian might think. But nothing was ever said. If I was ever redflagged for it, nothing ever came of it. And if it was going to happen it would have happened to me.
Funny Story...
It just so happens that the book was in my trunk (so nobody would see it) to be returned and I was involved in a weather-related vehicile accident that put a large hole in my trunk making it no longer water proof. The book was totally destroyed in the following days and I ended up paying for it and never turning it in. If there's a list out there, I'm on the "checked out and kept" part of it. ha!!

Me too! I find myself just thinking about it once in a while for no apparent reason...

LOL -- what a story!! The only time the librarian has asked me about any books was when I got about ten children's picture books. She said, "I thought you had retired from teaching?" So I explained about the Boxall Children's Reading Challenge.

I've completed 379 of the books on the list -- mostly in the first three categories (0-3, 3+, and 5+).

I'm a librarian. Librarians don't pass judgement on what people choose to read and are staunch defenders of the right to read what you want and of access to information. Librarians are more judgemental about what other librarians decide to acquire, weed or leave - look at the Awful Library Books blog for instance. :) However, if you destroy public library items (which are council property and owned by the community) and lie about it, that's when librarians will be judgemental. :)
Exercises in Style.Such a fascinating concept! I'm glad this is on the list because I would never have heard of it otherwise.

I swear! It got destroyed by the rain. An act of God! I think He may have been being the judgemental one....

I picked up The Quiet American by Graham Greene. My neighborhood book club is doing Author rounds in which each member has to pick a book by the same author. The first round was Stephen King. I think I will be picking Graham Greene when it's my round.

Started 2001: A Space Odyssey by Arthur C. Clarke yesterday. I watched the film the other week so I am hoping the book gives me a little more insight into the movie.

That's on my to-read in 2020 list. I downloaded the audio-ebook from Librivox to my computer. The Kindle ebook is free also.

The director Kubrick and Clarke worked together on the screenplay as Clarke was writing the book, so they're quite similar. The strategy seemed to work well.
