Fun book.
Fun book.

That's another on my shelf that I've been wanting to get to--I actually have a couple of Amado's. Glad to hear a positive review--makes me want to bump it up the TBR pile

A very-little-read book, but from your region. Will await your rating/comments.

The Secret Agent by Joseph Conrad and The Death of Artemio Cruz by Carlos Fuentes. I have read another Fuentes, The Old Gringo, this (A Cruz) seems more modern-experimental in style like Faulkner's As I Lay Dying.
I thought Artemio Cruz was really good, but the previews for the movie kind of put me off Old Gringo. Besides it being experimental, did you like it?
I am super far behind on my reading challenge, but I'm finally getting back to it.I started reading 1984 by George Orwell today. I have to read and annotate it for my AP English class next year, so the process will be rather slow, but I'm enjoying it notwithstanding.
I have had such a busy summer; I finally finished 6 weeks of summer school (to get ahead for grade 12) and now I have about 2 weeks of freedom before grade 12 starts up (although not really, because I also have to work and do online courses). Hopefully I will be able to relax a little and get back to the books soon... I have missed reading so much.

Just started Possessing the Secret of Joy by Alice Walker. This is my first book I’m reading by here but I also own The Color Purple so I guess I should read that too.

A darling book."
I agree. "darling" might be a perfect descriptor.

Yes, especially if you own a copy of The Color Purple, you should read it.

In my continuing attempt to shove the LIST down everybody's throat, I picked The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver for book club this go-round.
Sean wrote: "In my continuing attempt to shove the LIST down everybody's throat, I picked The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver for book club this go-round."I picked up a free copy on cassette (as I have an adapter) not knowing until yesterday that it's on the list.
Cassette? What's a cassette? :'D
That's a double win.... Something for free and a LIST book on top of it. I went to jury duty and they said that we can peruse their library and if we get into a book we are free to take it home. Woohoo! I took home a copy of Beloved.

I will definitely be reading that soon!
Just started 1Q84 by Haruki MurakamiI have read The Wind Up Bird Chronicles which I enjoyed but this one is a daunting task at almost 1000 pages. This one will take me a while to finish.
Mercedes wrote: "We started reading Dracula out loud... excellent first two chapters!"
I bet that will be amazing read out loud. I really hope you are doing the classic Dracula Transylvanian accent. I want to know who's is better yours or the hubby's!

Karina wrote: "I started Quo Vadis by Henryk Sienkiewicz the other day. I have mixed feelings so far."I also had mixed feelings about the book for about the first 100 pages. Then the story opened up and I really enjoyed it.

One of my favorites.
One of my favorites.
Mia wrote: "The Cubs and Other Stories by Mario Vargas Llosa. My first Llosa, starting it easy."
Short, but not easy. I recall a serious lack of punctuation in that one.

I started reading the other Jorge Amado book from the list, Tent of Miracles. It came up in my "Randomized reading list" from the Reading 1001 group, otherwise I probably would have read "Gabriela..." first (haven't read it yet). It will probably be a few weeks for me to finish due to the others I have going. It was at the university library here.
