Started The Talented Mr. Ripley by Patricia Highsmith. Very enjoyable so far. I have not yet seen the movie either so that'll happen when I'm done.

Edit: by life, not the book!

It jumps around a lot but I thought it was good overall.

I started Corelli's Mandolin, have read about a quarter and like it so far. No Corelli yet but I suppose he will come in soon. Maybe afterwards I will watch the film again which I saw about 15 years ago.

Mercedes wrote: "Sean wrote: "Started The Talented Mr. Ripley ....There are two films, in case you weren't aware, based on this one book; one French, with Alain Delon, from the 60s,."

Also there are 2 films from Highsmith's Ripley sequel novels: Ripley's Game which stars John Malkovic as an older Tom Ripley is very good and faithful to Highsmith's novel. Ripley Under Ground stars Barry Pepper as young Ripley- I haven't seen this one, it is lower-rated than the others but evidently not bad. I thought the French and American versions of "The Talented..." were both good.
There was also a good film made by Hitchcock of Highsmith's Strangers on a Train which was a very good novel as well.

Starting Family Matters, by Rohinton Mistry, who is more famous for writing A Fine Balance. Family Matters was dropped from the 1001 List after the 1st edition (but A Fine Balance abides).

Casey (caseynanako) | 11 comments I've been on a bit of a binge lately, now that I've moved to London and have over two hours of public transport a DAY. I've read There Bute For The (Ali Smith), A Visit From The Goon Squad (Jennifer Egan) and The Sense of an Ending (Julian Barnes) - as well as The Tale of Desperaux (Kate deCamillo) from the Children's list, and now I'm working on Middlesex (Jeffrey Eugenides) before moving to The Marriage Plot.

Ooo that's a lot of time traveling. But two good points. Lots of time to read and it's better than driving 2 hours every day.

My wife read The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien about a year ago and it's been on her shelf since then. I didn't even know it was a LIST book until I was browsing the list and noticed it. So, naturally, I started reading it.

At least I knew A Town Like Alice by Nevil Shute was a LIST book when I saw it on the shelf. Just that I kept putting it off. No longer...

Leona wrote: "I am reading the book 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die itself."

I have that book on loan from the library and keep renewing it. Seems nobody else wants it. Not sure how much longer I can do this.. ha!

But I keep it on my desk and reference it every time I start and/or finish a LIST book.

It's my "bible." And like The Bible, I don't think I could read it cover to cover.

Actually you are thinking of the TV series Cosmos by Carl Sagan (which Neil deGrasse Tyson did a follow up too). They did make a movie of the book Contact. I haven't seen the film, but the book was incredible.

I hated the movie, but I was a moody teenager when I saw it. I've been avoiding the book for that reason, though. Let me know if it's any good (and I will try to banish my angst-ridden self out of the way!)

Yeah, it was a movie, which I've seen several times but not lately. Contact is a good book after H.G. Wells' stuff. So far I'm loving Contact. I'm listening to it and at times, I have to back up and relisten. The segway between topics are not always clear.
