Hello, Arunabh, and welcome to the group. We have members of all different reading rates. (Being retired, I have an excuse for doing too much SF/F reading. :) I look forward to reading your thoughts and some of our topics.

Hi, Valerie. Welcome to the group. We read both kinds of books here, Fantasy and Science Fiction :) So pull up a keyboard and join in any conversations that strike your fancy! I expect many of the regulars will begin filtering back from the extended holiday vacation in a few days, and we'll talk about just about anything.

Henry Oldie | 18 comments Hello!
We are Dmitry Gromov and Oleg Ladyzhensky, the professional SF & Fantasy writers from Ukraine writing under the joint penname HENRY LION OLDIE.

(Prevention: English is not our native language. On the whole we write and speak in Russian. Our English is not perfect enough, so, please, excuse us for some possible mistakes.)

We’d like to introduce ourselves to this community.
We’re the professional writers since 1996. From 1991 to December 2013 we had published more than 220 hard cover books, including reprints and translations from Russian to French, Polish, Lithuanian and Ukrainian, or more than 50 original books (first prints); and some anthologies. More than 30 novels, 14 novelettes and more than 70 short stories were published up until now. At “EuroCon-2006” International European SF & Fantasy Convention H. L. Oldie got a title of The Best European SF & Fantasy Writer of 2006…
But our books never before had been published in the English-speaking world. So, in this huge literary world we’re only beginners, as many others.
We hope to publish our first fantasy book in English in January 2014 at Amazon and Smashwords in eBook format. The book was translated from Russian to English by our Canadian friends and professionally edited by philologists from DePaul University, Chicago, US.
Our official English WEB-site: http://oldie-worlds.com/news.html
We hope, nobody here will have any objections if we’ll put more detailed information about our book in this community when the book will appear at Amazon and Smashwords?

Happy New Year to all of you!

Sincerely yours,
Henry Lion Oldie.

Cameron | 1 comments Hello everyone! I'm Cameron! I've always been a huge sci-fi/fantasy fan. I'm a light reader (I want to change that). I'm open to any recommendations that you think are good! The sword of truth series really got me back into reading a few years ago and that really awakened my love for fantasy.

message 362: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi H.L.Oldie,welcome to the Sci-Fi and Heroic Fantasy group. And good luck on the translation.

message 364: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi, Cameron. Welcome to the group. I hope you'll join us for some interesting conversations about fantasy and science fiction.

For some ideas on other books to read, you might want to browse our Recommendations Folder.

I've only read the first two of the Sword of Truth series, but based on what I know of that sword and sorcery story, you might enjoy stories such as Sanderson's Mistborn, Sulivan's Theft of Swords, Douglas's The Wayfarer Redemption, or Brooks' Shannara (I assume you already read The Lord of the Ring ?)

Henry Oldie | 18 comments Hi, Charlton!
Thanks. Some translations of our books from Russian to English are already done. We hope, the quality of translations is good. You'll can to see it soon.

Jill (jmflores75) | 1 comments Hello! My name is Jill. I love to read, so I would often rather sit down with a good book than watch whatever tv show is currently on. :) I read many different genres: romance, paranormal romance, fantasy, popular fiction, and sci-fi and being the most frequently read. I find I don't like anything that reads like a text book :) I really enjoy reading well written fiction. Some of my favorite series are: The Sword of Truth, The Legend of Drizzt, The Chronicles of Narnia, Lord of the Rings (All read multiple times) I am participating in an in-person sci-fi/fantasy book club that has me branching out into more sci-fi books, which I find I enjoy. Not too surprising since I am one of those all around sci-fi nerds when it comes to movies/tv. Looking at the bookshelf for this group, I can see a bunch of books that I have already read and enjoyed, so that makes me think there will be others in the list I will enjoy as well. Looking forward to finding some more favorites!

Hi, Jill, and welcome to the group! Glad to have you join us for the new year. I hope you'll find a number of topics we discussed of interest, and it shall join in the conversation! (And for some of those books on the bookshelf you've already enjoyed, you might check our Book Discussions folder to see what members said about them in the past. We don't close those topics down, so new thoughts are always welcome if you'd like to add a comment!)

Hi, Roy. Welcome to the group. I hope will be hearing from you in the coming year. I found when I retired it was a lot easier to catch up on all that sci-fi and fantasy I've been meaning to read back when something called a job kept getting in the way.

Fard Johnmar (fard_johnmar) | 2 comments Hi. I'm Fard. I love both sci fi and fantasy and while I don't have time to read for fun as much as I'd like, I'm always interested in learning about new authors and books. My wife is also into these genres so I'll be on the look-out for books I can recommend to her as well.

Hello, Fard, and welcome to both Goodreads and this sci-fi/fantasy group. I hope you get the chance you'll find some authors you'll enjoy. (Your profile says you're a medical futurist; have you read any of Nancy Kress's sci-fi? So when you read do you like to get as far away from businesses as possible?)

Fard Johnmar (fard_johnmar) | 2 comments Thanks for the warm welcome! Thanks to you I just discovered Nancy Kress! The work of Dan Simmons has always interested me due to its post-human elements. Overall I'm interested in any/all books, even if they are close to my business life.

W.D. County (wdcounty) | 1 comments I'm W. D. County - Dave to my friends. I've been an avid reader of sicience fiction, fantasy, and horror for over 50 years, starting as a preteen with Asimov's Foundation trilogy. In the last few years I've discovered a passion and a talent for writing. This year has been especially rewarding, with my horror short story (Plastic Soldiers) appearing in the Aesthetica magazine's Creative Writing Annual 2014, and my novel (Sammi) recieving an honorable mention at the London Book Festival. Odd that the awards have come from Great Britain, but I live near Kansas City, Missouri.

Hi, W.D., and welcome to the group. I hope you'll be able to join us for some discussions of sci-fi and fantasy. (I'm not, personally, much of a fan of horror for some odd reason.)

And congratulations on your recent writing awards. Feel free to tell us more about your books in our Promotions folder if you like.

Hi, Corey. Welcome to the group. I'm not surprised you're a fan of Isaac Asimov, you just like him! Do people at parties ask you what you really thought of the movie adaptation of "Nightfall"?

Friend recommended this site and it looks great. I've been reading fantasy for probably 30 years too many authors to mention but always loved Gemmell. Feist,Donaldson and of course Tolkien. Haven't read as much sci fi but enjoyed Banks and Simmons. Looking forward to joining discussions and getting some inspiration from other members about good books to read

Miles Cain | 4 comments Evening (or Morning or afternoon whenever you guys read this), my name is Miles and I've always been an avid Sci-fi Fantasy fan, in fact it probably encompasses 95% of the books I have and will read. I usually only read a select few authors those mainly being ERB and REH, I however have not been in the loop for many good books coming out recently as I usually read older books and was wondering what would be some good series to jump into? I've been seriously thinking about picking up Markus Heitz Dwarf trilogy anyone familiar with the at all?

Hi, Miles. Welcome to the group. We certainly have a number of Burroughs & Howard fans here. Myself, I've tended to stick with a bunch of favorite authors, but now that I have more reading time in my retirement, I'm trying to expand that list, so to speak. Unfortunately, I haven't read any Markus Heitz, so I can't offer any advice on that, sorry. (It doesn't look like we have any active group members who've read The Dwarves, either.)

At any rate, I hope you'll browse around the active topics and jump into any conversation you might find interesting.

V.W. Singer | 253 comments Hello everyone. I'm a life long SF/Heroic Fantasy fan. Started off with EE Doc Smith, ERB, Howard, Andre Norton, and went on from there. Love Stasheff, David Drake and David Weber (More Dahak, Furies, and Safehold than Honor). John Ringo and Warhammer 40K too. As you might have guessed, I like military SF. But I love Edmond Cooper and James White (Sector General) too.

I'm also an author of hard core S&M Erotica.
