Hi! I go by Amoeba and I joined to get some suggestions on sci-fi and fantasy classics.I was an English Lit major in undergrad and an avid reader as a child, so I've read a bit of everything. My parents are also Sci-Fi and Fantasy nerds, so I grew up watching Star Trek and Merlin instead of Nickelodeon. My mom has an amazing knowledge of Children's and YA literature since she's taught for so long, and she had me read The Search for Delicious, Tailchaser's Song, Watership Down, Redwall (I love talking animals what can I say), The Hobbit, Something Wicked This Way Comes. Basically everything I read as a child had at least elements of Sci-Fi or Fantasy.
I recently finished Cat's Cradle and Ender's Game. I liked them and they were quick reads, but I prefer a sweeping sort of epic with a crazy new world, like Dune or LotR, that I'll be thinking about later. I also really loved The Left Hand of Darkness by Le Guin. I've read A Song of Ice and Fire and I love that outside of the 3 page long descriptions of food. Do you guys have any suggestions?

Hi, Amoeba. Welcome to the group!
The Recommendations Folder here has some suggestions on popular classics as well as newer award-winners.
Since you mentioned Le Guin, I thought I'd point out we are just getting started on a group read & discussion of her novella "The Word for World Is Forest".
For Epic Fantasy, I would recommend series such as "Wheel of Time" or "Mistborn", both of which have the advantage of being complete. Or for something a little further into the strange, "Perdido Street Station". I'm sure others here have other favorites to recommend.
And again, welcome to the group.

Hello everyone, my name is Alan, I'm 28 years old from Manchester, England. From a young age I was captivated by Science Fiction in its various guises. I started to get heavily into reading a few years back after a break through my teenage years and started to bury my neck into the likes of Dick, Zelazny, Haldeman, Gibson and more contemporary authors like Asher and Banks. Joining this group should extend my reading list exponentially, giving me a wealth of books I might not have discovered on myself. Looking forward to the group reads and discussing them with you all.
Nice one Alan.I'm pretty sure you'll find all the books you need here, along with the possibility to read books you dont need.. No, I'm kidding. Welcome...

Hi Alan, welcome to the Sci-fi and Heroic Fantasy group.
Hi, I've always been a fan of fantasy. Some of my favorite reads were Chronicles of Narnia and Robert E Howard's Conan series. Conan the Barbarian is still my favorite movie of all time! (the original with Arnold, not that debacle that came out recently)and I used to love Xena: Warrior Princess.
There's just something about fantasy and strange worlds that I enjoy. But sci-fi has to be really great in order to catch my attention.
I also write fantasy. My Demon Hunter series is somewhat on the dark side but it stays true to sword and sorcery fare.

Hi Cynthia, welcome to the Sci-fi and Heroic Fantasy group.
Hi Everyone! So a little bit about my reading/writing interests: I love social science fiction, feminist science fiction, alien civilizations, ecological and sometimes hard science fiction-with a bent toward biology, science fantasy, Epic/High Fantasy, and Magical Realism. I like books about epidemics, alien cultures, utopian and dystopian fiction, and robots. I will read just about anything with AI in it. My favorite authors are: Philip K Dick, Isaac Asimov, Anne McCaffrey, Ursula K Le Guin, Tanith Lee, Marion Zimmer Bradley, and Alice Hoffman.
I think that covers it. I read The Word for World is Forest in its novel length form only a few months ago and really enjoyed it.
Hello, I go by Blieu and I've loved reading ever since I was old enough to be able to read. My favorite authors are Shusterman, Hearne, Card, and Cline. I've only ever been attracted to sci-fi/fantasy books with some rare exceptions.

Hi, Melissa, and welcome to the group. That's pretty solid set of interest you have.
You probably already noticed we have a just-started discussion of "The Word for World Is Forest" elsewhere. We'd be delighted to hear your impressions of the novelized version.
If you're interested in social science fiction and hard SF with a bent towards biology, you might have a look at our recent discussion of Nancy Kress's "Beakers Dozen" and see whether any of the stories there sound like they might interest you.
I look forward to discussing SF/F with you!

Hi, Blieu. Welcome to the group. We had a discussion of Cline's "Ready Player One" recently and also a discussion of Card's "Ender's Game" earlier this year if you're interested in adding your thoughts there.
I look forward to reading your opinions.

Hi Melissa, welcome to the Sci-fi and Heroic Fantasy group.
Hi Blieu, welcome to the Sci-fi and Heroic Fantasy group.
Hello, I'm Adrian. I've loved books for most of my life; Sci-fi, Fantasy and Horror are my favorite genres. In Sci-fi I like anything involving robots/androids, post-apocalyptic stuff, steampunk and cyberpunk.
In Fantasy I like medieval sword-and-sorcery types like Lord of the Rings most of all. I also like fantasy that deals with mythology like Fae and different deities.
Adrian wrote: "Hello, I'm Adrian. I've loved books for most of my life; Sci-fi, Fantasy and Horror are my favorite genres...."
Hi, Adrian, and welcome to the group. With that diverse set of interests you should find plenty of like-minded fans to chat with here.

Hi Dave, I'm one of the old-timers in this group too. Welcome. I discovered SF and fantasy in my comic books and then moved on to the 25-cent SF novels that got handed down to me by my dad. Good to have someone else on board who remembers the old days!
Adrian wrote: "Hello, I'm Adrian. I've loved books for most of my life; Sci-fi, Fantasy and Horror are my favorite genres. In Sci-fi I like anything involving robots/androids, post-apocalyptic stuff, steampunk ..."
Hi Adrian. Adrian is my middle name--not many of us with that name. Lots of books in this group should interest you. I get a lot of good ideas from others who like Lord of the Rings (my favorite fantasy), et al. Just click on the name of someone who really likes a book that you do and you can see what else they've read. Then if you click on a book that sounds good, you can read the reviews others have written about it and add it to your "to read" list. Enjoy!
Hi, I'm a writer, artist, YouTuber, podcaster and just a girl with a procrastination problem. I love fiction in all it's shapes, but SF, Fantasy and Horror are always at the top of the list. I mean, if we are going to read books fro the sake of escapism, might as well escape to a different planet, right?
Hi Armada, welcome to the Sci-fi and Heroic Fantasy group.
Hello Friends, I'm Sach. As you may have figured out already I joined only just and thought I'd say hi.I'm originally from Sri Lanka though now I live and work in Tokyo, Japan as a software engineer. I'm with the software team that make, well, software for Canon digital cams.
I'm an avid reader, have been since I was a kid. During last few years my reading habits waned a lot, but that's only until I discovered Goodreads a year ago. Since then, I'm back on reading, good.
I'm a big fan of Sci-Fi, Arthur C Clarke and Michael Crichton being two of my favorite authors. I've read all of MC's and most of Clarke's books. Other than that I also have a keen interest in non fiction science books, particularly in evolutionary biology and cosmology. That doesn't mean I don't enjoy the likes of The Three Musketeers or Alice in Wonderland. Or the Ultimate Guide to the Universe. I just love books.
~Sach

Hi, Christopher. Welcome to the group. I hope you enjoy your stay.
We have plenty of people with taste both marvelous and strange, and happy to share. Check out some of the thoughts in our Recommendations Folder for some semi-organized suggestions. You'll akso find our discussions of specific books in our Book Discussions folder. (None of either are ever closed, so feel free to add your thoughs!)

Hello! My name is Snorri Kristjansson. I am from Iceland, I like cake and I've recently added a modest book about Vikings to the Fantasy shelves. It is called 'Swords of Good Men' and might not be epically epic enough to be called Heroic Fantasy, but... Vikings, man. Vikings.
As far as reading tastes go I'd pretty much read anything by Mark Lawrence, Joe Abercrombie, Patrick Rothfuss and Scott Lynch. I've read and enjoyed a bunch of Robin Hobb, Trudi Canavan, David Gemmell and Raymond Feist, and have read pretty much all of Terry Pratchett and Douglas Adams. I'm pretty sure that gives m'learned colleagues a reasonable shot at guessing my age. I am currently reading Tom Lloyd's 'Stormcaller', which I am enjoying. I am probably forgetting a bunch of writers, but one of the main problems of Western Civilisation is the combination of too little time and TOO MANY BOOKS.
Hi Old Guy and everyone. Well, I'm Tom/T. Jackson King and I've loved science fiction since the fourth grade USA. Took up reading it after reading Murray Leinster's The Wailing Asteroid. Was lucky enough to be an early reader of Stranger In A Strange Land by Robert Heinlein. Lately I've enjoyed reading David Brin, Roger Zelazny, Elizabeth Moon, David Drake, Lois McMaster Bujold and other fine authors. In the day job, I've been a gov archaeologist doing digs across the Western US, a reporter and editor for daily and weekly newspapers, and a sci-fi writer since the fifth grade newsletter printed a story of mine. Ancient history of Asia and the eastern Mediterranean are some of my favorite non-fiction reads, along with current world geopolitics. Been lucky that my Dad worked for the UN years ago, so I and my sister traveled over Europe, Japan and Russia. Got three grown kids and now live in Atom City--Los Alamos, New Mexico, USA. Love meeting new readers and writers from all over the world! Tom.

Hello, Snorri, and a belated welcome to the group. I apologize for not saying hello earlier - it must be Goodreads' fault, because I'm sure I've never lose track of the notification! :) (Honest, we're not being rude, where just being befuddled.)
You have an eclectic blend of fantasy writers among your favorites., some fairly serious people and some pretty funny people. I hope you'll find our conversations here interesting enough to join them.

Hi, Tom, and welcome to the group. Always nice to have another old-timer around (we seem to have quite a few who fondly recall the golden age of sci-fi.) And a fellow Southwester, too (though you're up in high country.)
I see you've already found several of our discussion threads to join in, so I won't bother pointing out the local scenery. Welcome.

Old Guy, thanks for the welcome. Yeah, I'm a "geezer reader" of Golden Age SF. Was lucky enough years ago to chat a few times with Poul Anderson at parties. Also got a fine personal letter from Roger Zelazny that supported my writing, along with a personal note from Ginny Heinlein, while Robert was still alive. This fall I will be attending MileHiCon in Denver beginning Oct. 18, in case you will be there. Best wishes, Tom.
Hi all, the names Robbie and I'm looking forward to sharing my reading experience with the group and hopefully discovering new worlds to loose myself in.I have to admit I have been a bit lax over the summer, I had not picked up a book in months. But as winter draws near I'm starting to get back into my reading stride and have just finished the first book in Jack Campbell's "The Lost Fleet" series. I will visit the second book in the series at a later date as even though it was enjoyable, it did leave me with that "can't wait to read the next instalment" feeling.
My current reads are Greg Keyes "The Briar King" book 1. I'm about half way through and have a feeling its all going to kick off very soon.
I also started reading Evan Curries "Into the black : Odyssey one" last night and am currently on chapter six. Really enjoying this book I must admit.
Well, time to get back to my book, wish everyone in the group all the best.
Robbie
Hi Robbie. I recently read Evan Curies combat sci-fi novel Into The Black-Odyssey One and quite enjoyed it. Plan to read Books 2 and 3. Tom.
Robbie wrote: "Hi all, the names Robbie and I'm looking forward to sharing my reading experience with the group and hopefully discovering new worlds to lose myself in...."
Hi. Robbie. Welcome to the group. I look forward to hearing your opinions on sci-fi and fantasy.
As it happens, I'm currently reading the 11th book in Campbell's Lost Fleet series, Perilous Shield, which just came out yesterday. So I guess that makes me a fan. :) (Through the first 5 books of the original series, I definitely had that "what will happen next?" vibe. After the book 6 finale of the original series, Campbell started two sequel series, "Beyond the Frontier" and "Lost Stars," which interact but star different cast of characters.
I tend to get a lot of reading done during the summer, but then come fall I waste a lot of leisure time watching American football instead of traveling the galaxy :)

Hello Guys! Recently found goodreads while browsing the internet and figured I'd try out one of the reading groups. I've been reading SCi-Fi and Fantasy books for as long as I've been able to read. Michael Crichton, Terry Pratchett, and Douglas Adams are probably 3 of my favorite authors. I know I can always pick up a book by any of them and love it. Sadly, 2 of them are no longer with us. The most current series that I've picked up and enjoyed would be Huamnity's Fate (only read the first book 'Seeds of Earth' so far). Looking forward to reading books with the group though and participating in some discussions.

Hi, Gary. Welcome to both Goodreads and the group. I hope you'll find some conversations here that interest you. I gather you like scifi/fantasy humor.
We tried to organize the start of a couple of specific book discussions each month. None of those topics ever ends, though they do tend to peter out after it unless someone revives them with a new comment. And we also talk about general sci-fi topics and recommendations. Join in anything that strikes your fancy.

Hi folks, I'm Mat, i generally read sf and fantasy I'll take escapism any day over the real world.
I'm more Zelazny than Heinlein, more Jordan than Martin and I like my Vampires to be more Dresden than Twighlight.
Locke rocks, I want to burn some Atium, to go outside and to find the name of the wind. If you could hear my noise it would be saying watch out for the Slake Moth.
I grew up with Milamber, Pvt Mandella, Kalkin, Corwin and Covenant.
I love Lyra, Molly and the weird sisters.
Cheers
Mat

Hi, Mat, and welcome to Goodreads in general and this group in particular. I see you've already found a couple of topics to join in on, and we're glad to have you as a contributor. I like your choice of authors, though I'm not sure I'd care to choose between Zelazny and Heinlein.
