Hi, Chris. Welcome to Goodreads' Groupdom in general and our little group in particular. I hope you'll be able to add to our Recommendations Folder, as well as find some useful suggestions there. Perhaps you can also join one or more of our monthly group Book Discussions, or just engage in a little General SF&F chatter.

Dave Skinner | 9 comments Hi everyone, This is the first group I've joined. I'm also one of the retired--looking back on 60 myself--and happy to have made it this far.
I have been reading Sci-fi and fantasy ever since I came across my first Conan collection in a book mobile in grade five (10 or 11 years old). Although, I do read other genres, but these have always been my favorites.
I will participate as much as I can.

Ross Jones | 1 comments Hi, All. My name is Ross and I too am looking back on 60. I have been an avid reader of Sci-fi all my life. Heinlein and Asimov are my two all-time favorite authors (Door into Summer and End of Eternity my favorite books respectively). Jasper FForde and Kat Richardson are new additions to my favored authors so I do cover a broader spectrum of Sci-fi. This looks like an excellent forum!!

A.M.C. A.M.C. (adamcroft83) | 8 comments Hi all, new author that thought it was about time I joined and started to network!

My first book is reaching conclusion, in the editing process now. The book focuses on one young man's personal battle to avenge the death of his family after a hostile alien invasion, becoming caught up in the middle of an inter-galactic battle and learning of the five power sources (Electrolism/Nuclearism/Radiation/Gravity/Magnestism) that wield ultimate superiority.

Story is fast paced and violent, basically Independence Day meets Star Wars meets Lord of The Rings with Game of Thrones level of violence.

If anyone would be interested in reading the first drafts before they are released then I would welcome feedback, or if anyone with an artistic flair wants to do some sketches of how they see the characters I would love to see a different perspective then what is in my mind - fee; free to connect with me on Twitter - @adamcroft83

Look forward to hearing from you all!

Ugur (ugur_basak) Hi I'm Ugur (Uğur) from Istanbul, Turkey.

I've started reading fantasy and sci-fi as a child, but they were mostly classics like Gulliver's Travels, Jules Verne's books etc.

When I was 17 I met with, Dragonlance, Shannara, LOTR & Hobbit and Belgariad and I could not give up fantasy.

My favorite genre is fantasy fiction, and prefer heroic, epic and high fantasy.

My favorite authors are; (not ordered)
- George R.R. Martin
- David Eddings
- Robin Hobb
- R.A. Salvatore
- Margaret Weis
- J.R.R. Tolkien
- Robert Jordan

Recent favorite authors;
- Michael J. Sullivan
- Mark Lawrence

Probably there would be more authors if I've a chance to read...

That really depends on your specific interests! There are several General SF&F Topics under discussion.

Plus, there are plenty of discussions of individual books in the Book Discussions folder. (We had a couple of additional new books each month in a semi-organized process.) We never close previous discussions, so they're always open for new thoughts.

The Recommendations Folder has both information on award-winning popular books and member recommendations based on specific sub-genre, such as Favorite Stand-alone Fantasy Books.

And there is a Just for Fun folder for discussing topics not specifically related to science fiction or fantasy.

There are lots of topics in all those sections, so feel free to add your opinions (or comment on previous opinions) on any of them that interest you. And if none of those topics sound interesting to you and you'd like to talk about something else, there is a "new topic" button at the top of the listing that will let you start your own discussion. Don't be shy.

Members who are also SF/F authors use the Promotions folder to tell us about their books, stories, and promotions.

Hi, Nio, and welcome to the group. Glad to have you with us and I look forward to discussing fantasy & scifi stories with you. Find some discussions here that interest you to join or start some discussions of your own!

I'm a big fan of Jordan's Wheel of Time myself. We have an open discussion topic for A Memory of Light and the series as a whole if you want to discuss any of it.

Jesse Duckworth | 7 comments Hello,

I am Jesse Duckworth and we (Chris Powell and I) started creating a world in 2008. Since then, I have been working on a novel, three novellas, and some short stories all from this world. I just published a novella through Harren Press (our own small publishing house) that is currently on amazon, A Song of Betrayal. I am focused on getting better as I finish up the follow up novella to A Song of Betrayal and work on our novel, The Keepers of the Seal.

I would certainly like to get more connected on here. Heres my page:

Powell is a really common name out here, I was just wondering if I knew anyone you know. :) guess not.

message 188: by Lowkey (new)

Lowkey | 2 comments It has been a long, dusty road, my companions on the journey have included Heinlein, Pohl, Burrows, Tolkien, Howard, Leiber, Delaney, Silverberg, Niven, Wolfe, Peake, Moorcock, Brin, Robinson, Herbert, Williams and many, many others.
Most recently Grossman, Reynolds, Meaney, Bakker, Brett, Weeks, Lawrence, Hamilton and Rothfuss have kept me entertained by the camp fire.
A special mention must be made for fallen comrades, Ian M Banks, you will be missed, taken too soon, remembered forever.

I like my fantasy heroic and my sci-fi operatic.
Looking forward to the conversation.

Kris | 3 comments Hi all,
My name Is Kris. I'm 33yrs old and living in Columbus, Ohio. I've been an avid SciFi/Fantasy fan ever since my older sis got me Pawn of Prophecy by David Eddings for Christmas when I was 11. Since then I'm always looking for the next new story to dive into. Pleas feel free to recommend something. Currently I'm looking for something along the lines of Glen Cook or Steven Erikson. Darker gritty fantasy.

message 195: by Andreas (new)

Andreas Welcome to the group.

There are lots of people that tell me that there wasn't dark fantasy before Cook and you have to look to newer times. They will point you to the trilogy starting with Prince of Thorns by Mark Lawrence. I wouldn't recommond this but it surely stretched the notion of what is acceptable.

I loved some older works much better: The Kane series from the 70s and 80s, starting with Darkness Weaves by Karl Edward Wagner. Alone the cover by Frank Frazetta is phenomenal.

Thanks I'll look into Kane. I've read Mark Lawrence. I enjoyed it but it wasn't exactly a thought provoking series. If it were a movie it would be Die Hard. Lots of action sequences but no real depth. I'm looking for something like Platoon or The Deer Hunter. Something that digs into all the little nasties hidden in humanity that can come out when we are placed in those conditions. Both are enjoyable but I just want a bit more meat in my story you know?

message 197: by [deleted user] (new)

Christine McIntosh (queenxine87) | 8 comments Hello! :) Christine here.

My love of fantasy started the day I read The Blue Sword in sixth grade. When I started reading Anne McCaffrey that same year with Dragonsong, my fate was sealed.

While I've read mostly fantasy since then, in the past few years I've started reading some sci-fi and more classics. It's just an all-around good time. :)
