Carly | 1 comments Hi, I'm Carly and I love sci-fi! I'm a huge nerd or geek or whatever you want to call it. I love Narnia and Lord of the Rings and Star Trek and Doctor Who. And Marvel Comics and just about everything else. Basically, if it's sci-fi, I'll read it.

Hi, Carly. Welcome to both Goodreads and the group! I hope you'll join us for some interesting discussions. Make yourself at home and jump into any discussions that catch your eye. If you don't find one you like, feel free to start one you do! Sometimes we talk about specific books (a couple each month), and sometimes we just talk.

Christen | 3 comments Hello! Christen here and I am an avid reader! I read anything as long as it doesn't bore from the start. I love reading because it transports you to a different place and let's you meet different people too. :D

Hi Carly and Christen, welcome to the Sci-fi and Heroic Fantasy group.

message 110: by Andreas (new)

Andreas I've been in this group since end of May but didn't introduce myself, sorry about that.
I'm Andreas from Germany, 43 years old and software architect.
I've been reading and reviewing very much in the 80s when I was (hyper-)active in the local fandom. Then came 20 years with reading only during holidays - the last years I played intensely MMOs and didn't take my time for reading.
Now I'm back, having canceled every computer game and switched completely over to books. Well, I'm raiding books, sort of.

Usually, I'm reading on my kindle paperwhite. But I love seeing books, so I buy them additionally. I fear that in 10-20 years, nobody can read those digital books anymore and having a physical backup is always a good thing.

Looking forward to book discussions with you!

Hi Andreas,a belated welcome to the Sci-Fi and Heroic Fantasy group.

message 113: by Tara (new)

Tara Marino | 6 comments Hi everyone.
I am looking for new books to read. so far I have read Artemis Fowl series, LOTR, HP, Diana Wynne Jones books, Nine Kingdoms series by Lynn Kurland, Septimus Heap series by Angie Sage, Belgariad Series, books by Gail Carson Levene, Catherine Murdock, Julie Kagawa, Michelle Harrison, Marissa Meyer, Jessica Day George, Patricia Wrede, Patricia McKillip, Julie Berry and more than 300 other books. But the mentioned books and authors are some of my favorites. I need fantasy books that are CLEAN with strong heroines. I do not mind romance but it shouldn't be soppy. I do not like books where the heroines were raped and broken. I know that I am asking for a lot but if anyone can direct me to any such book, I will be really grateful.

Hi, Tara, welcome to the group.

I'm afraid that other than LotR & HP I haven't personally read any of the authors you enjoy, so I'm going to hope others here can make a few suggestions.

message 115: by Andreas (new)

Andreas Welcome Tara!

I don't believe you :) You surely have read something from McKillip, right?

The others sound like YA authors, right?

message 116: by Chris (new)

Chris Hogsten (killingjoke04) | 3 comments Hello, Names Chris. Been lurking for the last 2 weeks thought I would properly introduce myself. My current favorite books are Ready Player One, as well as Enders Game. Primarily joined the group to find something to read since the recommendations on Goodreads typically dont appeal to me :/

Hi, Chris, welcome to both Goodreads and the group. I'm glad you decided to decloak.

If you've been reading, you may already be aware we have a very recent Ready Player One discussion and a discussion Ender's Game that began last March. Please feel free to add thoughts to either topic if you'd like to extend the conversation.

We also have some member recommendations by various categories down in the imaginatively-named Recommendations Folder. Feel free to add your own thoughts, or start a new topic on a different sub-genre that's more to your taste.

Hmmmm... no. I suppose this is another reading assignment? :)

But since you have read McKillip, maybe you can suggest something similar for Tara?

message 119: by Andreas (new)

Andreas McKillip? Sure, the Riddle-Master trilogy (starting with The Riddle-Master of Hed) is quite well-known. It won the Locus back in 1980 - that's around the time I read McKillip last time :)

And welcome Chris!

message 120: by Alan (new)

Alan Brown | 3 comments Hello to everyone in the Sci-fi and Heroic Fantasy group. This is my first posting in a group on Goodreads.
I am an author of Sci-fi and thrillers. However, the main reason for joining the group is reading. Since starting to read (Thomas the tank Engine), I have progressed through adventures and seafaring books to those great classics by Isaac Asimov, Ben Bova, Jules Verne, John Wyndham, and etc. These writers helped to set the stage along with all those writers of short stories for Amazing Stories. Nobody could beat The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings for fantasy, but many great books are around. I look forward to becoming part of this community and hearing of new discoveries.
Alan (originally from London, but now living just outside Great Yarmouth).

Hi, Alan. Welcome to GRoupdom in general and our humble SF&HF group in particular. Please feel free to join in any of the ongoing discussions that interest you. We organize discussions of specific books each month, and fill the time between with general SF&F chit-chat. Or you can start a new topic if none of them catch your fancy. And if you like, you might talk about your own writing in our Promotions folder, too.

message 122: by Andreas (new)

Andreas Nice mustache, Alan :)
We read a classic every month - this and the next two months we dive into Heinleins works.

Hey Andreas, eventhough I like YA, I really want to read fantasy books. And I am open to clean YA books suggestion too...Well any books that have magic in it with a clean plot will do. Any suggestion? YA books have good beginnings but I just can't stand the love triangles..

Joe Donahue | 3 comments Hi, my name is Joe. I'm a wannabe writer and a small brewery owner. I joined Goodreads because I have a novel I'm about to self publish and trying to find ways to market it, but I also enjoy getting involved in online communities like this. Don't worry, I'm not going to be one of those authors that just constantly spam their book and push it down your throat. I really went to get involved and immersed in your group. I look forward to getting to know as many of you as I can.
