SOLVED!: Old children's book - girl who hurts her back [s]

I remember reading an old children's book about a little girl living in a little town (not Pollyanna). She disobeys her parents by playing on a swing, falls off and hurts her back. She is bedridden for a couple years and learns to be patient and kind.

She has an aunt who is also bedridden and serves as a role model.

All the characters keep quoting a poem about all kinds of things going wrong "for lack of a nail" - i.e. one little mistake can have grave consequences.

The girl's name might be Sarah, but I'm not sure.

For some reason, this book is better known in England than in the US, although as I recall it is set in New England. The sequels are:
