Sukhvinder is bullied, racially abused, is not understood by her own parents and suffers from terrible self esteem yet ultimately she is the most heroic character, and, despite what she posts about her mother, arguably the most likeable character in the book. Did you know a Sukhvinder in your life? What are you trying to tell your younger female readers through Sukhvinder?
dear my inspiration J.K Rowling, I'm from Indonesia, I love your novel so much and i have question for you, it's true that Barry Firbrother died by his illness or beacause of his politic opponent ? and Krystal Weddon is pregnant by Stuart Collins or Obbo? thank you
What made you decide to write something very different than what you have written in the past? Why the big jump and will you be writing a new book any time soon?
I'm not sure if there is anything you can actually do about this, but when and if you publish another book. Please tell your publisher £20.00 for a book is far too much money and truly put me off from buying "The Casual Vacancy" when it first came out. It's about £8 ish now (on amazon.co.uk), so I might purchase it soon. You are an amazing writing and I wish you all the best. xx
harry potter and the casual vacancy are the books with entirely different genre.how did it plot of this book came in your mind?
what was the inspiration for you to write a book for the adults, have you got tired of the child fantasy world?
I went into this book preparing myself for the fact that it was not like the Harry potter books, and was rewarded with the fact that this book stands all on it's own quite nicely. I was wondering if you planned on writing another adult book anytime soon?
Years ago I heard that you were contemplating writing a children's mystery series? I believe that you are one of the most complex and creative authors, that I have had to good fortune to read. Please do not stop writing the world needs a worthy story!
What happened to Terri after the death of her children, because in all the people began to be "better" because of the death of Krystal and Robbie. Did she relapsed at drugs or became a healthy person?
What made you decide on writing adult books now after harry potter and do you believe that you will write anymore children's books?
Patrick wrote: "If you could ask J.K. Rowling one question about The Casual Vacancy, what would it be? In celebration of the paperback release, J.K. Rowling will answer one winning question about the book from Goo..."What inspired you in writing "The Casual Vacancy"?
How long did it take to write to the casual vacancy and when and where and how did you create the idea for it?
First of all...how do you sleep at night knowing that you've broken so many hearts with the tragic stories you pen? Ok, but seriously, The Casual Vacancy was a difficult read for me because it is very real and raw. It took me weeks to stop thinking about characters like Krystal and Sukhvinder, because they were so true to life, as were their situations. Do you find yourself exhausted after creating such detailed and heartbreaking stories? If so, how do you recover and move on from something so haunting as The Casual Vacancy?
how did u get the inspiration to write such an amazing book? i try to find amazing different things to write about but its always the same
Casual Vacancy was a fabulous book, but a much darker more charged book than the Harry Potter series. How/Why did you decide to go to such a different way of writing? Was it difficult addressing such adult subject matter, after writing books appropriate for younger ages or was it easier because you didn't have to restrict for younger ages?
In what direction do you think your next book will take - a prequel to Harry Potter or more adult literature?
I want to know why you felt you needed to be so foul, crude, and vulgar in your adult novel? Do you think adults expect those things in an adult novel? I want to know why you felt those things were necessary, when you have already proven you can write well without it?
What made you change gears from writing a children's fantasy book to an adult fiction book? Did you face any obstacles by doing so?
In Harry Potter, there was the Patil sisters and now in "The Casual Vacancy", there is Parminder Jawanda. Is there any sort of personal connection that you have by adding Indian characters into your books? I personally love the fact that you do! Makes me connect with the characters more.
When in the process of writing did you know what the (tragic) outcome would be - did you know from the beginning, or did it come to you along the way and what was your reaction?
Was it hard to write through Robbie Wheatons' innocent unknowing eyes during his short views we saw in the book knowing his tragic end?
With every word writers set down, they not only give the readers a piece of themselves, they also learn about themselves. Many a times you have said that you 'needed' to write The Casual Vacancy. What has it given you, as a writer, and as a person?
Why was the book so dark? It could've been for adults, but not necessarily so dark. I loved it but it's too dark to ever pick up and read again.
I have been waiting for such a work like this, can't wait to see it Live, Mam.. you're awesome. My Question is : what takes you so long to start a new begging i would like to call it "Other begging"... however you know you have millions of fans allover the world ?
Who do you think was more cowardly? Krystal for ending her life or Fats for not owning any responsibility?
Hello Mrs.J.K.Rowling how are and your daughter.I hope you were fine Will you continue to write books for adults or will you give treat to your little fansI'm expecting another book like harry potter I'm the biggest fan of you and your books let god shower all the bleesing to you and your family
Was there ever a different outcome for Sukvinder, Robbie and Krystal? While writing it, was it always going to be that way?
i haven't read this book but im a huge fan of harry potter and im asking a question about that instead. Will there ever be more books about harry and his family?
Thank you to everyone who participated - you submitted so many thought-provoking questions! This thread is now closed to further submissions, and we've selected a top five: Vote here to pick your favorite question!
J.K. Rowling will answer the winning question!
How would you characterize your experience of relating to your Casual Vacancy characters? I wonder if your Potter writing felt almost maternal as you brought your characters from childhood to adulthood - was it different to relate to a primarily adult set of characters? Did they "behave" or were they more unpredictable? Did you feel more or less attached or understanding? And thank you, of course, for sharing your words and your stories - they've meant so much to me!
