The author is normally the first editor. It has to be polished well enough for you to attract an agent, who is basically a well read grammar expert who is looking for the next best seller. If your agent likes the work, he'll take it up and submit it to publishers, where the real editing gets to work. But your book must be good enough to attract an agent(grammar nazi) first.

That's the traditional route. Self publishing, you hire an editor. Then you regulate how many you sell and advertise for yourself. The only successful self published author was Christopher Paolini, and that's because after self publishing Eragon, the son of a publishing company somehow found the book in his hands and the dad read it. So though you can self publish, it's not really recommended if you want to make it out there.

I'm trying to get an agent... After I finish writing a 'kick down the door' book. Agents are loath to take on a series, but if an author has one book that has no sequels, it's a short arrangement, that if it works out, they'll publish more of your books, perhaps your series.

Which is my fault, since I'm writing a 7-8 book series.
