Auggie (audraa) Auggie from Auggie-Talk here. BLOGGERS need to listen up. We've got a problem. I wasn't sure if everyone was aware. As of Yesterday I've discovered that many people WEREN'T and I wanted to give a heads up to those who don't know.

GFC is being retired by Google and will no longer be an appropriate platform for following blogs or having others follow yours.

The GFC tool will cease to update starting July 1, 2013. Your RSS feed will remain if you use Blogger but it will virtually stop functioning as a way to network and connect with others.

Google is doing this in an attempt to bring more focus to GOOGLE+ as their new platform.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR BLOGGERS?

Well... if you mainly utilize GFC it means building back up an active readership. You can do this by advertising the heck out of a NEW follow tool such as Linky or RSS feed.

However there is one blog-follow website that everyone seems to be picking and that's "BLOGLOVIN" www.bloglovin.com

BlogLovin' actually allows you how to TRANSFER every single one of the blogs you follow on your GFC reader over to their website. I follow over 700+ blogs (yeah, I know. It's great! I love my bloggers!) and it took about 2 minutes for all of them to be lifted over to their feed reader.

Because of the EASE of this transition we're all hoping (us bloggers, that is) that our followers will take the time to sign up for BlogLovin and transfer their GFC feed over. That means you don't lose a reader!!!!

This is going to be a rough transition, but hopefully it will work itself out.

I have a post filled with resources on how exactly to go about transfering your blogs. It's the easiest way, that I've seen.

Otherwise, Linky/RSS/and e-mail follows are going to start being our best friend.

Be proactive about telling your readership about this change, guys, so you don't lose any readers.

Best of luck! Post with any other suggestions for websites to use for readers or advice on how to make the transition smooth.

Blog on!

Mind if I include snippets & link to this thread in our group message? I've been alerted to the fact Bloggers aren't all aware.
Or aware of Feedly (which I love).

It is staying but it's less efficient & many blogger blogs, including my own, no longer use it. We don't wish to use a low-quality way of following when there are options that are so *much* better. You can easily migrate google reader to Feedly!

The entire point of GFC is to be able to connect with blogs via updates through their reader. GFC is being replaced by Google+ and eventually the actual tool will disappear. *shrugs* For now you'll be able to keep that "number" that shows how many people were following you before but it won't keep those readers actually reading, which is the point.

There's no reason to even gain followers if they're there only as a picture and not as an active participant or reader. So, if the feed is gone, then so are your views. Those GFC followers won't know that you have new posts up and if they follow NUMEROUS blogs, people are going to end up forgetting to check back, even if they really enjoyed reading.

So, even if the GFC tool remains to keep on the side of your blog, it's useless.

AMY - Absolutely. Any information you have is going to be helpful to everyone!

Kate (kaitlins16) I prefer Bloglovin over GFC anyway, so the change isn't a big deal for me. Plus, I'm a new blogger and haven't built up a lot of followers yet.

Bloglovin is so much more useful when looking at different posts. I've put all the blogs I follow into groups, so it's more organized. Also, I can click on someone's blog and see all of their "unread" posts. That way, I don't miss anyone's posts. :)

I've definitely started to see the value of BlogLovin'. I've been a member for over a year but haven't really used it because of GFC. Now that I'm seeing how easy everything is to navigate, and how organized I can get things, I'm rolling my eyes at myself for not being more attentive to it before!

Eveline Bloglovin is great! The only thing that bothers me is that you can't see your whole follower list, only a small part of it.

That is definitely annoying but you don't on Feedly (except as really GFC isn't going but google reader it does pop up there for us blogger users). I encourage following via feedburner too! It's compatible with ANY readers not just these two popular ones. I've seen so many posts that are Feedly V Bloglovin'. It's pretty even who wins... XD As far as I'm concerned it's a matter of opinion & what you want. Feedly has everything I need (including an awesome app) & definitely is worth trying if any of you are unhappy with Bloglovin'! It's up to you, of course! (:

Julianna Smith | 9 comments It took me a long while to build my followers up. It's very sad to start over. Yes, Bloglovin' is easier, but to someone who's worked very hard at being where they are it's a punch to the gut.

Will the email subscriptions be gone as well?

message 11: by Julia (new)

Julia (juliavdc) | 48 comments I still don't believe that GFC will be gone, because when you follow a blog via GFC, it does to your blogger dashboard AND Google Reader.
Plus, Google never announced that GFC was being continued along with Google Reader. I've searched for days, and can't find one solid piece of evidence.
I made a Bloglovin just in case, but I guess we'll have to wait and see what happens on July 1st.
