We Tell Ourselves Stories in Order to Live is a collection of essays from several of Joan Didion's previous books. One of those books is Slouching Towards Bethlehem, which was originally published in 1968. The essays in that book show us the California where Didion grew up, the New York City she experienced, the Haight-Ashbury scene of San Francisco, and more. The title of the book is evocative; readers may want to know where it came from. The source is actually William Butler Yeats's 1919 poem, "The Second Coming." For the full text of that intense poem, check it out on the Poem of the Week website.
