Nathan this provides excellent insight into the classical world. Can be taken in chunks. I got through the Greeks, to the Romans. Fox's analysis focuses on three themes: the concepts of Freedom, Justice, and wealth, as understood by the people at the time. Utilizes art, literature, historical sources and archaeology.

Get conversant about the founders of Western Civilization! It's fascinating stuff.

Richard Cubitt I agree. Excellent work by Fox. Would recommend his work on Alexander (the Great)

Michael Oliver I thought it was a superb overview of the period, especially as the history revolves around the three themes of 'Freedom, Justice and Luxury.'

In fact I was astonished at just how much the concept of luxury aroused the ire of so many classical authors.
