Kelly Sermeno (twitterpated) when i was in high school in my multiculutral english class I read this book for my outside reading book. I can't remember a lot about the book though. There was a girl in high school as the main character. She kept going to the nurses office, the first time I think was because she started her period (im pretty sure, but i might be wrong with that). After that she kept going back to visit the nurse. She developed a crush on the school nurse I think and in the end of the book she figured out she was gay. Im not sure on all the details of the book hopefully this is enough for someone to recognize.

Kelly Sermeno (twitterpated) i guess it'll stay a mystery

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) | 1396 comments Oh Kelly, Please keep checking back. Often, books are found months after the original posting. It's not at all rare for it to take some time for a book to be found. In 2 days not even all the current members of this group have probably read your post and we're always getting new members, and many of them check old posts. Don't give up; it's very possible someone can help you find your book.

April Ann (bloomer) | 515 comments What year did you read it? Was it an adult book or YA?

Was it set in the U.S.? Was the author male/female, American or not? Anything will help narrow down the search.

Were there other characters that stood out, parents, friends or teachers? Any other underlying themes like divorce or death?

Mir | 805 comments That sounds vaguely familiar (like something I was assigned for school decades ago) but I can't help with an author or title.

April Ann (bloomer) | 515 comments Okay, here's a list of titles from a search from 1950 to 1985 (since I don't know when the book was read) of "lesbian literature".

Annie on My Mind, Rubyfruit Jungle, In Thrall A Novel(she has an affair with a teacher, not a school nurse), Crush, Happy Endings Are All Alike, Hey, Dollface

Kelly Sermeno (twitterpated) i read it around 2004 but it wasn't a newer books so 80's could be a good guestimate.

I do remember her being somewhat of a loner, I think she lost her bestfriend so that why she continued to go to the nurse because she didn't have any friends to hang out with at lunch time.

Kelly Sermeno (twitterpated) i just remembered something. I think the parents split up. maybe the dad beat the mom? im not sure on that but I remember the dad being gone and she was with her mom and her mom worked really hard, they were poor.

I also don't remember her 'coming out' as being part of the description or know about that before hand. I remember being genuinely surprised when I read that.

hope some of this helps.

Kelly Sermeno (twitterpated) It is a YA book set in the US, but im not sure what part. I remember the mom was a big part I remember her parents splitting up and her mom working really hard and they were poor. I also remember her parents divorce or split was a big deal so it must've been set a while back. I also think that she was black, I don't know if that makes any difference or not. I do remember vaguely her visiting her dad one time at work, he was a janitor for a hospitla i think. Im not sure about the hospital part but i know he was a janitor. she snuck behind her mom's back to see her dad i remember that. Also the grandma was a big deal she was closer to her grandma then her mom. Her grandma owned somekind of a store. Her grandma died in the book also. I think it might have been set durring the civil rights movement because I remember her going to school one time and something happening where they had to leave, there was a riot or something of the sort.

I REALLY REALLY hope im not mixing up 2 books. but it is a small possibility.

April Ann (bloomer) | 515 comments Kelly, I'll look some more tomorrow, I'm sure with this info it will help narrow the search. I hope I can come up with something.

Kelly Sermeno (twitterpated) thanks so much

HeavyReader | 450 comments Almost positive the book in question is NOT Annie on My Mind or Rubyfruit Jungle. Also, although not mentioned, it's also not Deliver Us from Evie which is also likely to turn up in a search for YA books about teenage lesbians.

Kelly, are you still looking for this book?

Rainbowheart | 28776 comments Surprised no one else recognized this. I thought a lot of people had to read it in high school.

Coffee Will Make You Black by April Sinclair.

I tried to add link but kept getting an error....

message 16: by Rainbowheart (new) - added it

Rainbowheart | 28776 comments Thanks! Yeah, I got to the little screen to add the book, but when I clicked the button it wouldn't add.

message 17: by Serendi (new)

Serendi If you're using the app, it won't add links. Hope that gets fixed someday!

Rainbowheart | 28776 comments Thanks for info. Maybe it was just a problem last night. I tried again now and it worked. I'm not using the app so that wasn't it.

Kelly hasn't been active since Feb. I sent her a PM. If she doesn't respond in a reasonable amount of time, then it's time to move this down to Abanadoned

message 20: by Rainbowheart (new) - added it

Rainbowheart | 28776 comments Oh, do you have to get confirmation to say it's solved? I'm sure it's the right answer. Stevie is black, gets her first period and gets a crush on the school nurse and figures out she's gay. Her dad was a hospital janitor just like Kelly said.

In order for it to be posted in Solved it has to be confirmed by the OP. No confirmation means no solved. But it will be moved into to Probably Solved since after reading the description, I agree that it is about 96% sure that it's the right answer. That last 4% is the OP's confirmation.

Ok well obviously we have relaxed the rules just a little bit and if presented with a high bar of evidence, we can move an abandoned thread to Solved. I agree the plot points match, moving to Solved.
