D.M. (dmhenry) | 17 comments Hi everyone! Last week I started writing a blog post about a subject that I have been interested in researching for a long time: Crowdfunding! I must admit that I am a guppy in the waters right now in terms of this new social media phenomenon, but in a way I guess everyone is since it’s still relatively “new.” From what I can tell, it’s a great tool for authors that don’t have large amounts of capital to spend on professional editing, cover design, and marketing.

However, crowdfunding is like all other social media outlets – you will either succeed or fail. Through this discussion feed I want to explore crowdfunding, and provide the necessary basic information that we all need in order to complete a (successful) crowdfunding campaign. Have you ever tried to crowdfund your book and promote it via other social media outlets? Please share your experiences – both the good and bad. All of us have our own stories and can learn from each other.

My next post in this discussion thread will contain helpful information and links to the various crowdfunding websites.

I’m looking forward to a great discussion!

D.M. (dmhenry) | 17 comments Crowdfunding more in depth:

I've done a bit of research for a blogpost that I wrote and I've found, what I believe, to be the crowdfunding sites most appropriate for authors:

1. Kickstarter
2. Indiegogo
3. RocketHub
4. gofundme

Now, Kickstarter seems to be the favorite. Want to find out more about the fees for each campaign website? Then you can take a look at these two articles:

As I mentioned above, my research was completed for a blogpost that I had written. Are you thinking about crowdfunding your next novel? Below is a list of resources that I hope you will find helpful.

D.M. (dmhenry) | 17 comments Ann,

What a gripping story! I have tweeted it and placed it on my personal FB page. Would you mind doing an interview for me for my blog? I would send through some questions and you would okay the post before it goes live. Please let me know and good luck with your campaign!

Ann Lee (goodreadscomannlee) | 21 comments Hi Thanks for all your support and I have decided to exit my project from Kickstarter. I will relaunch my project on kickstarter in about two weeks. I really should have chosen the 45 day campaign instead of 30 days. In the interim, I will re-set my marketing campaign designed to win. I would like to give you an interview during the last two weeks of my campaign.

I will keep you posted and join in group conversations.

Again thanks for your support and all the information you have posted. I am going to use all the information towards success.
Ann Lee

Kind Regards,

Hi Philip,

First of all – I am really sorry for the delay in responding to your question. I agree that Crowdfunding is a complex and evolving concept. It is a wonderful way for entrepreneurs to gain funding for their projects. The simplest way that I can explain the concept is this way: You upload your project onto a crowdfunding website, such as Kickstarter. You provide details about what your project is about. You can also include a book trailer or video. In order to gain interest from donators (a donator can be anyone), you can decide what gifts they will receive from you in return for their donation. It’s a great way for the donator to feel involved with the project. Much better than walking into a store and buying the finished product with no involvement in its creation. The donators do not own any part of your project and they will not receive any royalties. They will only receive whatever gift was mentioned for the price of the donation (e.g., for a donation of $25, you will receive a personalized mug and a free ebook version of the book).

A great website to peruse for more information is crowdfundingeye.com. Please remember that in order for your campaign to succeed it’s always good to first have a solid plan and an already established fan base that will react to calls to action. I would also recommend that you carefully research the various crowdfunding websites to see which one is best for you – each website has their own policy.

Good luck and please let us know if you decide to create your own crowdfunding campaign!

Kind Regards,
Donnica

Hi Philip, I wish your friend all the best! They can really get a head start by joining a group like this one as well as perusing other social media sights, including Linkedin for support/advice. So, please let them know about this group. If they would like to connect with me, then they can do so via twitter @dhenry560 or Facebook https://www.facebook.com/TheMercuryTrial.

Once again, I wish your friend lots of success in building their platform. They can't go wrong with friends like you helping them!
