The ending!?! (spoilers!)

I read this book for a class on pre-Columbian Anthropology. It was a clever choice because of the symbolic ending. I suspect most people don't have a professor to talk to about the ending and I'm curious if readers took away more than the couple of reviews who allude to it as odd. I honestly would have said the same, but discussing the ending in the context of myth and symbolism took the book to another plateau. Thoughts?

I just read it and liked the ending. I would've liked to have known how Tiny got on after, but maybe that would have spoiled it a little. I sense there's stuff going on beneath the surface, and I shall happily muse upon it.

I have heard the Zen explanation, and my explanation is that we sacrifice ourselves always for something nobler.
