Ninth grader, Phillip Malloy, wants nothing more than to be on the school track team. When his English teacher gives him a failing grade, Philip takes the matter into his own hands. He breaks a school policy and is unwittingly supported by his parents. Is he truly showing patriotism and freedom of speech? Read this Newbery Honor book, and you decide.

He is truly showing freedom of speech because he wants to make the school track team but he will not if he doesn't pass English. He does not do anything to improve his grade because he knows the teacher doesn't like him.He then sings the national anthem and gets suspended for doing it. Then he tells his parents he was suspended for singing the national anthem. This shows freedom of speech because he is singing the national anthem and he doesn't have too.
