I am a firm believer that comparing a movie to the book it was based upon does not really make that much sense, as the experiences (reading vs watching)are so different. Still, there are a few movies I have seen in the past that capture the atmosphere nicely, e.g. Of Mice and Men (with J. Malkovich)or Midnight in the Garden Of Good And Evil...any thoughts?
I'm going to have to respectfully disagree with your assessment of the film version of "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil", which I found to be lifeless. However, I agree with your overall point: Films have to be judged on their own merits.
