Emilie | 4 comments I don't remember a ton of details and some of them may not be right (I'm afraid I've combined books in my mind)... But, I read it in the early 1990s, from the older children's/ YA area in the library.

It was about a young girl who goes through a portal (possibly in a tree) and ends up in a magic kingdom. She is given a wand and a guide (bird of some sort?) She has to complete a quest before she can get back home and goes through all sorts of tests/ trials. I remember her being very annoyed with the whole adventure and sarcastic about the things she needed to do.

I do not remember how it ends. I think the cover had a picture of her under a tree and a bird of some sort.

Hope someone can help. I remember looking for this book only a couple years after I read it and wasn't able to find it. I would love to find it again!

Witch and Wombat possibly? Altho there are several people involved. And no tree. But it's a good story, even if it isn't yours.

Andrea (onyxdragonlady) | 8 comments I'm commenting so that I can see when this is updated. If it had multi-colored snow in it the it could be the book I've been looking for, for years. Also since I read it as a child it would have to be at least 15 years old :/

Kimberly Manahan | 9 comments Is it possibly The Ancient One? The older covers definitely have trees on them. The main character, Kate, has a magi walking stick and is guided by the owl Tinnanis through the past when magic abounded.

Angel, I believe the book you're looking for is The Farthest-Away Mountain.

Debbie I can't tell you how grateful I am! My mom took some of my books to the DI when I was about 10-11 and I've been looking for that book ever since. I'm 30 now. I got one look at the cover and knew. That was it. That's the one. 20 years I've looked! I'm ashamed to say it but I'm tearing up right now. It won't be as awesome as I remember it I'm sure it. I mean I was 10 but I'm finding and ordering it RIGHT NOW for my kids. THANK YOU THANK YOU AND THANK YOU AGAIN!

Debbie is on Storygraph (silentrequiem) | 89 comments This shouldn't have been shelved in SOLVED. Angel wasn't the OP and the OP's book hasn't been found.

Andrea (onyxdragonlady) | 8 comments Yes. The OP hasn't found their book yet. I apologize for my over enthusiastic response. I really am grateful to have found my book. I hope the OP can find hers as well.

Cheryl (cherylllr) PM and link sent, but OP isn't very active, this might wind up in abandoned...

Emilie | 4 comments I completely forgot about this thread. None of those books sound like it... I wish I remembered more about it. If I could go back to my hometown library I feel like I would be able to find the spot it used to be shelved.

Any of these? To eliminate.

Emilie | 4 comments I've looked through about a dozen lists of fantasy children's books. I feel like the title was something with Happy or Happily in it. And possibly there was a very overgrown, living castle in it (though that may be from another book altogether.)

bookel | 4030 comments Good to have a title keyword to go with. After a few minutes of searching on worldcat (the word 'happy' did not come up with anything likely), tried this: Search results for 'ti:happily' > '1950..1995' > 'Book' > 'Fiction' > 'English' > 'Juvenile'
Fifth result down.
The search for happily ever after
Author: Patricia Goehner Baehr
Publisher: Mahwah, N.J. : BridgeWater Books, ©1995.
Edition/Format: Book : Fiction : Juvenile audience : English
Database: WorldCat
Summary:
Tired of not measuring up to her sisters, Ketti finds herself transported through a wormhole to a land of fairy tale characters where she helps Cinderella's coachman-rat achieve his "happily-ever-after."

Did a search on Google Images.
Look! A wand, a tree, a bird!

The author also wrote The Way to Windra, which was on the above list. I've added The Search for Happily-Ever-After to the list. If searching for the book secondhand, note the middle name Goehner is not on the cover.
