Jacob Peled (peled) Just gave up on "Sins of the Fathers" Sins of the Fathers by James Scott Bell by James Scott Bell.
I like the "Legal & Trial" genre. So I thought, here is another Grisham type of book. Problem was that it becomes kind of a religious book. It starts with a small trickle of mentioning God, and later on becomes a flood. I am not a religious person. I don't believe in God. Seems as if the author is trying to convince us otherwise. Why not stick to the trial story. Why bring God and church time and again. After 40% through the book, I gave up. There are so many other good books out there. Why waste the time.
"James Scott Bell" Reminds me of another author - "Richard L. Mabry" with his medical mysteries. Also a very religious Christian, who keep bringing God into his stories, trying to convince you on his existent,.
Please give me a good story, without the obvious attempt to "convert" me.

I can totally relate. I can even deal with the supernatural--sometimes they're fun stories, but not the preaching. No way, no how.

Just finished The Forgotten by David Baldacci. It's the second in the John Puller series. I didn't think it was as good as Zero Day was, but it was still pretty good. Took a while to get going but in the end it all came together for an exciting finish. It's on my 2014 Top 10 list, but it may fall as the year moves along. Today I will be starting the latest Andy Carpenter book called Unleashed by David Rosenfelt. This is a great series.

Jacob Peled (peled) Started reading "The Second Son" The Second Son by Charles Sailor that was mentioned in this forum. Not in total line with my usual genre, but after 10%, it looks promising.

Lance Charnes (lcharnes) | 421 comments I’m often on the lookout for good business-themed mysteries and thrillers. Not ones where the hero or villain happens to be a businesscritter, but ones where business is vital to the functioning of the plot, where the mystery or thrills grow out of the supercharged environment of high finance or corporate skullduggery.

Nothing Personal: A Novel of Wall Street , career securities trader Mike Offit’s debut “novel of Wall Street,” promises this on the book’s product page: “Warren [the hero] soon finds himself at the center of two murder investigations as a crime spree seemingly focused on powerful finance wizards plagues Wall Street. The blood-soaked trail leads to vast wealth and limitless risk…” Financial and personal mayhem! Good stuff, right?

Not so much. Nothing Personal is a crime novel, but not a murder novel. The crime isn’t in the couple of killings, which in many ways are beside the point; it’s in the way day-to-day business is done in the corporate finance world in which Our Hero works. A solid three stars.

Since I reviewed this book for Criminal Element, I can't copy it all here. However, you can read the entire review -- and a bunch of other good stuff -- here.

I just wish she'd pick Joe and stick to it. Who comes up with the idea of a giraffe running down the street? So crazy that it was hysterical.

Tim The Enchanter | 130 comments I finished Dead Scared - Dead Scared (Lacey Flint, #2) by S.J. Bolton by S.J. Bolton. The series is dark and interesting. Earlier, I called S.J. Bolton "Tana French Lite". I am changing that to Tana French Dark. A lot of similarities between the two but Bolton is much darker.

As a side note, I posted the review to my website and S.J. Bolton read them. Pretty cool.

Ter'e Crow Lindsay (terecrow) Gosh, a second post! Sorry, might as well get this in too.
I am a huge fan of Linda Castillo. I started reading her Amish mysteries.......yes, the Amish mysteries and I love them!!!! Don't pooh-pooh them and think they are light reading. Not at all. Great twists and turns! As soon as one comes out, it is in my hot little hands.
Linda is terrific. Give her a try! (and no, I do not know her personally)

I don't see why Evanovich can't have Stephanie choose (Morelli) and still have the books be good. I think it would freshen it up some. Imagine what could happen if she got pregnant. Plus, I would really like to have Stephanie ask Sally Sweet to be one of her bridesmaids. He might even shave his legs for it!

Barbara (cinnabarb) | 10060 comments I finished Judgment Call: A Brady Novel of Suspense by J.A. Jance. High School principal Debra Highsmith is gruesomely murdered and some students seem to be likely suspects. However, Ms. Highsmith was a mysterious person with a secret past and the investigation widens. Soon another murder occurs at an art auction. Sheriff Brady and detective colleagues investigate and find the culprit who has (what seems to me) an unlikely motive. In a side story, Sheriff Brady re-examines the death of her father many years before. What was deemed an accident may have been murder. To me, this tangential story could have been left out. All in all an okay mystery book.

I enjoyed the BBC series very much, very moody. Mind you, I always felt that Wallander walked into solutions more by chance than skill, but it was still a very interesting series. I have yet to read the books, but I do have some on my TBR shelf to start.

I've seen the BBC adaptation and while I love Kenneth Branagh I saw the original Swedish production first, many years ago, and I have a hard time getting the original actor out of my head. Still, the BBC did a good job with the stories.

Just when we readers get rid of ex-husband Pete another man pops into the picture with Ryan. That part drives me mad!
