Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments There seems to be a little discussion section for every aspect of Twilight plus it has it's own category. So I thought I would start one for The Southern Vampire Mysteries written by Charlaine Harris. There are a lot of characters to discuss. Plus it is a more adult series. Hey it has its own TV spin off too. TrueBlood. Just to start the ball rolling. Who is your favorite Vampire in the Southern Vampire Mysteries? I like Bill Compton myself but Eric is pretty cool too. Who's your favorite shifter or were? Alcade I think I dig the most. There are so many characters in Sookie. Vampires, Fangbangers, shifters, witches, daemons, faries?,LOL. Take your pick.

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments Whats your favorite Sooke Stachouse book? I liked Living Dead in Dallas becasue it ended so happily with Bill and Sookie reunited and happy. Club Dead rocks but Sookie had to dump lonsome vampire Bill after risking her life to save him. Man that was a drag but the plot goes on thicker than ever. Vamps, werewolfs, witches who hoo. Sookies got it all gwin on!

message 3: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments Now I freaking know lots of you have read these stories and dig them. Cat got your tongue?

message 4: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments Series books are funny because they must also be written as books that you can still read just one of. In case you haven't read any of the others. Sookie Stackhouse has to always tell you who Bubba the Elvis vampire is in each story. Also give you a brief rundown on her life to date. Which gets longer the farther the series goes along. I have had to read this series from last to middle to first. However from reading the later books I have a synopsis of what is going to happen in books 4 & 5. I just started Dead to the World. This must be the one where Eric looses his memory,LOL.

message 5: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments Yeah it is. Eric is runing down the road shirtless on New Years Eve.

message 6: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments I just finished the last of the Sookie Stackhouse Southern Vampire Mysteries AKA TrueBlood. Now I am ready for the last story Dead and Gone. I figured out now why I like these books so much better than any other series. Usually I only like old gothic vampire stories or the really great Vampypre works of literature like Carmilla & Dracula. Because the vampire story is just a vehicle for revealing a much more profound subject. Well in a way that is what Sookie Stories are like. They have Vampires and Werewolves, and other supernatural beings in a complex society. Which alone is interesting enough. But it wasn't until I finished Dead As A Door Nail that I figured out my real attraction. They are mysteries. All thorough the story Dead As A Door Nail you are thinking the mystery is about who is killing shape shifters in Bon Temps. But really it is a mystery within a mystery. Even with the mysterious murders of shape shifters, and Tara being kept hostage by the evil renegade vampire Mickey, and the big fight for pack leader of the werewolf pack of Shreveport the real deal going on that you don't know about is that Sookie is going to be assasinated by a vampire in a revenge killing. She is barely saved at the last minute. Southern Vampire Stories are as much about mysteries and about vampires and supernatural beings. What Charlaine Harris has done is combine two genres of books. Vampire books and mystery stories, and porn. She is not the first one to do this. Lots of vampire stories have mysteries in them. But none of them have the complexity of supernatural society and devious mystery as Charlaine Harris books. Southern Vampire Mysteries rock.

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments Who hoo lucked out and got a copy of Dead and Gone that was not checked out. Should be at the central holds dept for me in a day or so. All the other compies at different branch libraries are knew deep in holds. This is supposed by critics to be one of the best of the series. The description sounds good! I have just enough time to dig into "The Phantom World" by Augustine Calmet. The second part of that book, Revelants and Vampires.

message 8: by Cary (last edited Jun 10, 2009 06:01AM) (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments I can't believe no one has anything to say about the Southern Vampire series, and it is so serious bad. Every one yaks there head of about Twilight and Edward and to tell yah the truth. Ain't nothin happening in that Twilight series. Its a great series to put you to sleep for real. Wassup!

message 9: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments One has to wonder with award wining actors like Anna Paquin(Sookie), and Nelson Ellis(Lafayette) plus Bill Moyers in no slouch. Why no one has much to say about what is easily the best and most popular vampire TV show ever.

message 10: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments Just started reading Dead and Gone. They are called the Sookie Stackhouse stories now. That is on the books cover. Dead and Gone a Sookie Stackhouse book. So I guess Southern Vampire Mysteries no longer applies. In every book Sookie is stabbed, shot, and gets physically assaulted. She has shot one person, staked two vamps, and smacked around a few people herself. All in self defence of course.

message 11: by [deleted user] (new)

First off i LOVE Charlaine Harris and the Sookie Stockhouse books and i would have to say my favorite vampire is either Bubba or Eric and my favorite book is club dead... just figured i would put my own little input in :]

message 12: by Cassy (new)

Cassy Kennedy | 6 comments Wow! You really are frustrated with the whole continuous talk about Twilight. You asked about what was our favorite Sookie novel. I love Dead to the world, I think Eric without his memory is funny. Honestly I love Bubba. But I wouldn't want him anywhere near my house! (I own/ reside with 3 cats, lol) I've read the entire series, they are awsome. Have to read them again though, I just watched Tru Blood.

message 13: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments I think they should not have made Bubba quite so screwed in the head. I think that his character should have turned out to be kind of a stoner vampire a little goofy in the head from being fryed all the time. But the part about having drugs making the Elvis vampire permenantly mentally deficient does not make sense, and only fits in with Americas war on drugs. Vampires when they die have every brain cell in their head die too yet they come back thinking clearly. So the Bubba thing does not make sense. Except just for fun. Which it is funny and I like Bubba. I just think his character should be stoned out and not mentally deficient. I also think she should have made Bubba into a Elvis impersonator with a band that played in Shreveport. That would have made for a much cooler Bubba. Hopfully in the TV series TrueBlood where they have radicaly changed several of the characters from the book like Tara, and Lafayette. They will make Bubba different and possing as an impersonator intead of a cat eating idiot.

message 14: by [deleted user] (new)

I am sure they will make Bubba in the show and i am sure that they will change him up a bit... but i like that the show and books are a little different it makes it so that there is still a little mystery in the show for me.

message 15: by Cary (last edited Jun 16, 2009 08:10AM) (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments Oh for real. In the book Lafayette is a minor character dead by the first chapter of the second book. But in the TV show he is a major character and not the sterio type drag queen portrayed by Charlaine Harris. I love that clip about the AIDs burger. Matter of fact Nelso Ellis in one of my favorite characters in the TV series TrueBlood. He is like a real gay or bisexual person would be. He wears makeup and dresses feminine but underneath he's one kick ass dude. I know from real life drag queens are some of the toughest most dangerous to screw with people on the block. Years of persecussion make them crafty and tough. Not only is the TV version of Lafayette real funny and interesting. He also can be very down and dirty. He knows about human weaknesses sexual and physical and exploits them fully to his advantage. He sells vampire blood which is like selling drugs. In one sceen he says" I do what I needs to do to get by". Now that is real life. I am just now getting HBO this Friday and will finally get to see full epsisodes of TrueBlood. Hopefully they will have reruns of season one. Or I will just by the DVD set which is only $50.

message 16: by [deleted user] (new)

I know if you have like digital cable that it is on demand all the first season and then it puts new episodes on the day after or you could just go to Hulu.com and check em out

message 17: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments I get all my phone, computer, and soon TV through AT&T who use Direct TV as the cable provider. I will see if I can pickup Hulu.com In a month or so I am getting rid of my old piece of junk and getting an Apple P.C. Thanks,C

message 18: by Cassy (new)

Cassy Kennedy | 6 comments I believe that the justification of Bubba being so retarded wasn't just the drugs, it was also the timing, he was mostly dead by the time the vampire turned him. What's Hulu.com? is it free? I don't get HBO, so at the moment I have to wait for the series to come out on DVD.

message 19: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments You can get series on for $50 on DVD. It is not on Hulu or Surfthenet. Which show certain reruns. They will be showing reruns on HBO however at some point. You can get a good idea on Season one from the spoilers at TrueBlood website.

message 20: by [deleted user] (new)

yeah hulu is free is just a website that you just type in the show you want to watch and it gives you the link :]

message 21: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments Hulu has a lame list of shows anyway.

message 22: by Cassy (new)

Cassy Kennedy | 6 comments Well, I already watched Season one of Tru Blood. I was just hoping to not fall behind with season 2. I hate having to wait for the DVDs.

message 23: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments Season two episodes are shown Sundays at 8:00 on HBO, and rerun the following Saturday at 10:30

message 24: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments Our local TV guide is very inaccurate. TrueBlood shows on HBO Sundays at 8:00pm & 9pm depending on wether you are watching HBOeast or HBOwest. Runs of the previous episodes show at 12:00 & 1:00 depending on which HBO channel you are watching. Its all very confussing at first. I just got Satelite dish TV. They are installing so many dishes because the TV broadcasters lied when they said your TV would pick up the new digital signals with rabbit ears. You have to have cable or satelite dish to get TV at all now days. Cheers, Cary

message 25: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments Oh man TrueBlood is so good. The hour goes by in the blink of an eye. Leaving you wondering were the show went. It is that absorbing. I have never seen a TV show fly by like that and grip every moment of your intrest. TrueBlood is the badest V for Vampire show on TV. What do you think? Are they Turning Lafeyette into a Vamp or killing him? Inquiring minds want to know. LOL

message 26: by J.D. (new)

J.D. Stroube Cary wrote: " Oh man TrueBlood is so good. The hour goes by in the blink of an eye. Leaving you wondering were the show went. It is that absorbing. I have never seen a TV show fly by like that and grip every mo..."

I am betting that they end up turning him!

message 27: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments I'll bet your right because Lafayette was just to well liked a character, and they don't have any black vampires. I wish I could have seen season one when Lafayette was human.

message 28: by J.D. (new)

J.D. Stroube Cary wrote: " I'll bet your right because Lafayette was just to well liked a character, and they don't have any black vampires. I wish I could have seen season one when Lafayette was human. "

OMG! You didn't see season one?

message 29: by Cary (last edited Jun 24, 2009 07:46PM) (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments Nope I sure didn't Joy and it really bums me. I kept wondering who the strange black man was in Erics basement. Then I realized that it was Lafayette out of drag, LOL. Then they were gonna turn him or kill him, and I thought oh man I will never get to see human drag queen Lafayette. I am so crushed. Surely they will rerun Seaon One. They have too! I just loved it when Bill stept in front of Sookie, and said " I am not prepared to loose you Sookie". Go Bill go! So he snags Sookie, and they have make up sex. Knowing that Bill & Sookie will break up eventualy also bums me. I must say they made Eric one ruthless freakin Vampire.

message 30: by J.D. (new)

J.D. Stroube You could probably get True blood from your local library or a video store. I know they have the 1st season on dvd at my video store...
Wow, I devoured season one on dvd. That would suck to not see it!

message 31: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments You can buy the whole first season on DVD Blue Ray. I have an HDTV and TrueBlood season one is only $50.00, that's peanuts.

message 32: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments Moonlight is on the Scifi channel Fridays at 8:00

message 33: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments TrueBlood is a bold show. I can't believe the blatant reefer smoking, sex, and murder that goes on. That hour long show flys by. Hands down the coolest show on TV. Man can that witch roll a honkin blunt reefer or what? I cant wait to get a Fangtasia T shirt.

message 34: by J.D. (new)

J.D. Stroube Cary wrote: " TrueBlood is a bold show. I can't believe the blatant reefer smoking, sex, and murder that goes on. That hour long show flys by. Hands down the coolest show on TV. Man can that witch roll a honkin ..."

Did you like the Minotaur? LOL

message 35: by Cary (last edited Jul 01, 2009 05:27AM) (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments Hey Joy very funy. It was not until the second time I watched that episode I thought it might be a Minotaur. In the book Sookie is attacked by a Mynaed with a Razor back pig at her side. The mynaed carries a flail or branch. That she hits you with to poison you. When Sookie was being attended to by that odd doctor who likes vampires in the book. But apparantly not on TV. Sookie says something like she thought she saw a human with a bulls head. Then Eric sends Pam and Chow. Out to Look for whatever is was. They said they found human tracks with an nasty animal sent. However Minotaurs don't have claws, don't have poison. So I am not quite sure what they got going on. TrueBlood sticks close to the basic Southern Vampire Mysteries but they change them around allot. Like could they not find an oriental actor and give him tattoo's to play Chow? Still I want to see Laffayette in his drag outfit, LOL! Layafayette will not be a drag queen in season two. I think that the black audience for the show did not like seeing Lafayettes character as a drag queen. Nelson Ellis played that role beautifully however. You'll notice in future episodes he is dressed in an African hat and is wearing a Dashiki a traditional African mans shirt, and telling Eric he is through dealing drugs/vampire blood and is changing his life. Oh well

message 36: by Natalie (new)

Natalie (nd181106) | 1 comments I wish so badly that Lafayette would be a queen this season! He is so amazing at playing it, and I loved his character last season.

I love the series and the books. I am wondering when/if "Bubba" will be in it! I hope, I just absolutely loved him in the books! I know it's not a huge role, but he makes some of scenes!

Also, I just finished the 7th book and I NEED TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS NEXT! if anyone's read the entire series hit me up and TELL ME! I hate surprises and would love to know what's next! I have so many questions!

message 37: by Cary (last edited Jul 06, 2009 07:03AM) (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments Bubba is in every book if you have read the Southern Vampire Mysteries. I have read all eight, and Bubba is in all eight. His apprearances are brief. Sometimes he hangs around guarding Sookie and sleeping over at Bills. But he does have some major parts. Like in the Witch Wars when Bubba and Sookie sneak up on the Witches hideout. The Allied Vamps & Weres figure the Witches will not be able to detect Bubba's muddled up brain. So Sookie and Bubba do the reckon before the vamps and weres storm the Witchies pad. Also I just finished book eight. That book will be known as the Fairy Wars,LOL. Niall fairy prince, Sookies great great, great grandfather says he is sealing of Faery from the Human world. As he leaves he says "That vampire really loves you". Sookie goes which vampire Bill or Eric. Hm inquiring minds want to know. Also it was the assasin faery brother and sister team of Neave & Lochlan who are water faries, and pulled Sookies parents car into the water and water niads pulled them under and drowned them. You have to read very carefully or youll miss it. This is all revealed towards the books end. Allot of bad stuff happens in this book. But I thought it might be the last one. However Charlaine Harris has left it wide open for more books. It is not as fun as some of the other books because a lot of wierd things are revealved and terrible things happen and some of your favorites will die. I can't believe they did not show a new episode of TrueBlood for the Fourth of July. Boo!

message 38: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments I think when Niall said "Sookie that vampire really loves you". He was reffering to lonesome vampire Bill. It was Niall and Bill you rescued Sookie from Neave and Lochlan. Bill was badly wounded saving Sookie. He was Sookies first lover. I like Eric because he is so ruthless and wicked. I think he truly loves Sookie. But he is so full of himself. Bill is a good guy. I think his love for Sookie is true, and unselfish. I think ultimately Sookie will go back to Bill. When Sookie begins to age and loose her looks. She will ask Bill to turn her. Bill is so laid back and Sookie is such as simple country girl. I bet if they hook up they will stick together, live in the country, and steer clear of the dangeroeous vampire politics. They will be together an eternity.

message 39: by J.D. (new)

J.D. Stroube So Cary, were you upset that an episode of True Blood didn't air on Sunday? I'm irritated. I needed my True Blood fix! LOL

message 40: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments Are you kidding? I was very, very pissed. I kept thinking they were saving the best for last when they showed three episodes in a row. That blond girl at the Fellowship of the Sun camp is hot. When she got Jason, and went down on her knees and started praying with him it really turned me on. I am one sick puppy, LOL. I think something is going to happen between those too. I can just sense it.

message 41: by J.D. (new)

J.D. Stroube Cary wrote: " Are you kidding? I was very, very pissed. I kept thinking they were saving the best for last when they showed three episodes in a row. That blond girl at the Fellowship of the Sun camp is hot. Whe..."

I think that something is going to happen between them too!

message 42: by Cary (last edited Jul 09, 2009 06:07AM) (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments I forget the blonds name. It one the tip of my tongue. Her husband says to Jason. Now my wife,_____ does not make her bananna pudding for just anyone. I can't remeber her name. Real simple and Biblical. Like Sarah or something. LOL I looked up the synopsis of the episode. Sarah Newlin is the blond bomb shell that Jason is gonna get all ovah! I would get on my knees, and pray with her anyday. Lord I am wicked BAD. tee hee.

message 43: by J.D. (new)

J.D. Stroube LMAO Cary! You're so funny...

message 44: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments Cool Joy, I try to be anyway. The praying scene is rather suggestive. Which is just why I like TrueBlood as much as I do.

message 45: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer did anyone see the newest episode? what did you think?! i LOVED the sookie-eric dream scene! FINALLY!! and godric meeting the sun was heartbreaking! thank god lafayette got tara away from maryanne and kicked the crap out of eggs! i sure hope maryanne is gone before sookie gets back!

message 46: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments I have a feeling Sookies coming back will be the only thing to get rid of Marryanne. Even then she may be still lurking around Bon Temps

Michelle (In Libris Veritas) (shadowrose) I just started watching the show because curiosity finally got the best of me. I'm nearly done with season 1 and I'm trying my hardest to catch up with season 2.

So far it's pretty interesting, I'm trying to over look the fact that HBO tends to make their shows come close to porn at times but other then the overly excited libido of everyone it is pretty good.

message 48: by Cary (last edited Aug 19, 2009 06:04AM) (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments The Sookie Stackhouse Southern Vampire Mysteries by Charlaine Harris is where true blood comes from. The books themselves are mutiple genere. Vampires,Mytery,Romance/Porn. TrueBlood varies from the book in that everything is a little more intense. There is drug use, graphic sex, and ultra violence. The books only had drinking, sex, and violence. But yeah TrueBlood is not a YA section vampire series book, and the show is X rated. I put this topic up months ago and no one ever answered it. Then I found out why. There is a Sookie Stackhouse book/show group. :)

message 49: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer what did everyone thing of the new episode? first, i must say that im sad that i have to wait 2 weeks for the next episode and im even more sad that its the last of the season! now, i have never seen evan rachel wood in anything before, but i was pleasantly surprised at how great of a queen she is. i love that sam is trying to find ways to get rid of maryanne w/o having to die and its even better that he asked eric for help. hopefully there will be more eric and pam in the last episode and then next season! for those who've read the books, i like that they introduced hattley before becoming a vampire, and cant wait for that part of the story to come to the books. im very excited to see who gets cast as the berts! sam was very sweet with arelens kids. im sad that maryanne got to layfette :( and thank goodness that jason is back to being jason!

message 50: by Cary (last edited Aug 31, 2009 09:54AM) (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments Well the new episode Frenzy rocked of course. The Queen was great, Yahtsie! I loved seeing Bill with the Queen. Obviously Bill and the Queen have a history. Bill may not even be an agent of the Queen in TrueBlood just a friend. It was cool seeing Bill talk to Hadley. I like both Bill and Eric. It looks like Eric is going to get stuck dithering with the Queen and it will be up to Bill,Sam,& Sookie to deal with Marryanne. I think ultimately from what the Queen said. When the Maenad finds out that her special God isn't coming. She will be in a point of vunerability. At which point Sookie will put the zap on her. I have read all the books so far. But I missed season one of TrueBlood. I am going to have to get the DVD set of season one for Halloween. Next season they need more Pam & Lafayette, and Jessica. I like the Bert brothers too. I think they would have shown up in Frenzy episode if they had intended to have them in the show. I don't think there is going to be an Andre either.
