I adored both, but if I absolutely had to choose it would be TMI because of Jace. That said, the ending of TID was the best ending I've ever read -it was so sad and happy at the same time I balled my eyes out for like an hour. I loved both series and this is really a cruel question because they are both soooo good.

As much as I loved TMI, I feel like TID was much better! I liked the characters more. It's just something about them that makes me feel like I can relate. And although they were to be similar ages as Clary and Jace, they seemed to be more mature. I can't describe it. I just feel as if it was better haha.
Easily TID for me. The writing is a bit better, less juvenile as are the characters, the steampunk is awesome, and I connected instantly with the characters. I think it also helped that the series was shorter than TMI.
TID!!! I read it after TMI. I found the characters more interesting and the fact that it was based in a different era made it interesting aswell
For me, definitely TMI. I've tried reading TID, but I just can't get through it. I honestly can't stand Tessa (at least until she befriends Magnus in the Bane Chronicles).
in my opinion, the infernal devides series is so much better than the mortal instruments because it just has more emotions and depth. I've never cried that hard while reading a book like on the last 100 pages of Clockwork Princess! The characters are more interesting I think and the parabatai bound between Will and Jem is just awesome. Another Topic- Will and Jem! How can you not love them? I'm so glad Cassandra Clare wrote these wonderful books!(sorry for any language mustakes, I'm german.)
Definitely TID. Mortimain was an awesome villian. Tessa was a majorly cool main character. The plot was obsessing. I loved the Tessa- Jem- Will love triangle, Will and Jem were so totally perfect friends, And honestly, Will was just so sweet, funny, and relatable, he could totally carry TID even if everything else was horrible. ;)
TID. I love Will and Jem. Will's character seems more tragic to me and distance all the time and Jem is just so kind and strong. Tessa's character is interesting too, never knowing who or what she is and getting betrayed but the one person she thought would fight for her. Plus it's set in London, I'm obsessed with London. And you get to see Magnus interacting with and different group, see him makes attachments he doesn't usually make. Don't get me wrong I love all of these books, but TID was my favorite. I think also because it was just the 3 written, there was no trying to stretch the storie. I liked seeing other generations of the characters we already know.
I would have to say TID. I loved the time period, all of the characters (especially Sophie who was everything to me), Mortmain who was just a great villian, just everything about it. I think if TMI had ended at just the first three books I may have had a tougher choice (I would have still picked TID but it would have been a closer race) but I just didn't love 4-6 as much as the first three so TID is hands down my favorite.
AAh omg thus question kills me every time!! I love both of them so much and I just recently read TID and I was just so in love with characters. I genuinly did prefer the characters in TID to TMI but plot wise, I prefer TMI. Not to say that one is better than the other though because they're both great.
I have to admit that I like TID better. Back then, I continue to read the whole of TMI just because of my curiousity about Malec and Sizzy. I love TID more because it kinda feel more matured. The characterization itself, in my opinion, is far better that TMI. We can easily differentiate the character and how the way they're think and feel. We just know and not asking questions about why Will do things and how Jem think things.
I think that TMI is my personal favorite because it was where I was introduced to the Shadowhunter world. The storyline just draws you in. However, in TID, the characters are more dimensional, complex, and mature.
TID is so much better. So much more intimate, and the relationship between Tessa, Will, and James is so much better than TMI. I agree about Cassandra Clare maturing and writing better in TID. But I love the entire ShadowHunter chronicles none the less.
Okay I'm a little late to this party but oh well. I want to say that I love TMI the most because those books were the first of Cassandra Clare's books that I read and they introduced me to the world of the Shadowhunters (which by the way is obviously my favorite world :P) but honestly in my opinion TID was soooo much better. I'm not a hardcore book critic type but even I felt like the characters just had so much more to them and there was so much more meaning to the story and the relationships between each and every character. I love Clary, Jace, Alec, Isabelle, Magnus, etc but Tessa, Will and James just have something to them. Something that makes me want to reread the trilogy again and again. Of course they're both amazing series though!
I like both but... maybe TID. I love Jace but Will... Will is my preferit character ever. I think Clary is okay but sometimes she is a little bit stupid. Instead I like everything about Tessa. Talking about the plot I enjoyed TMI but i loved the TID.
P.S. Sorry for my bad english :)

I loved TID soooo much. TMI was okay but I was so in love with TID when I read TMI that I didn’t like it as much.
I liked both... but I was very intrigued when reading Infernal Devices, while with Mortal instruments, I was reading, but something, I couldn't feel anything for Clary, unlike with Tessa. Girl, I cried when Will was like I wouldn't marry you, but I'd sleep with you.
TID. I love all the characters so much. TMI was great. I am happy that we are getting more of present time shadowhunters and we’ll get TLH.
TMI, hands down. Don’t get me wrong, I fell in love with them both, but there is no way that Will is better than Jace, Tessa is better than Clary, or Jem is better than Alec. Just saying.
Read these books ages ago (I just found out this discussions page and this thread) and I'm so happy that most people here prefer TID like me. I love TMI but I fell in love with TID and I still am actually- though I haven't read it again recently. I felt that TMI could've ended in three books but Cassandra dragged it on which I was okay with but for the last book besides wondering who was going to die I remember being so excited for Tessa to appear and Jem being Jem again. Up to now I still can't pick between Will and Jem.
