Kimberly I was wondering if I can read this series without reading the Mortal Instruments first? I read City of Bones and never continued the series and I want to start this one. And I know its a prequel series to the Mortal Instruments. And I was just wondering if I have to read TMI first?

Yasmani You don't have to read TMI to read this series but I highly recommend you read TMI! It's sooo good!

Avani I would recommend reading TMI first. I think it provides a more comprehensive background of the Shadowhunter world, and since Cassandra Clare wrote TMI first, you'll be traveling the journey as she did.

Lena i actually read clockwork angel before reading CoB. I got through the book perfectly fine although reading at least the first book in TMI might help you understand some of the background info on shadowhunters better.

Claudia the Night Owl Read TID first.

Hannah You can pretty much read them in any order. I've seen a lot of people who read the first three TMI books, then Clockwork Angel, then CoFA, then Clockwork Prince, CoLS, Clockwork Princess. There are a lot of connections between the series that you'd probably pick up if you read them alternating like that, but really they're so far apart (2007 and 1878) that it doesn't matter much.

Luna Well I did as in started reading Mortal Instruments way before I knew about Infernal Devices, makes perfect sense.Either way works.

That's the order Cassandra Clare recommends they be read

Anna TMI gives more info about Shadowhunters and other stuff than the TID so yeah, I think you should read it first.

Ciara I recommend you read TMI first as it will give you lots of background information, but it is not completely necessary.

Josey You should read TMI first, just because it will help answer questions you may have, it explains little bits in the other books and because they're amazing!

J.C. The way that she wrote them is actually how you are suppose to read them. The first 3 IM books, then the first ID, 4th IM, 2nd ID, 5th IM, and then the 3rd ID. They make the most sense that way.

Rachel READ IT IN ORDER OF PUBLICATION TRUST ME!!!!!!
1. CITY OF BONES
2. CITY OF ASHES
3. CITY OF GLASS
4. CLOCKWORK ANGEL
4.CITY OF FALLEN ANGELS
5. CLOCKWORK PRINCE
6. CITY OF LOST SOULS
7. CLOCKWORK PRINCESS
8. CITY OF HEAVENLY FIRE(SOON TO BE)

Hannah TID is my favorite series and by reading it it will definitely give you background on the Herondale lineage, Ithuriel, you will be able to catch glimpses of Tessa and have a MUCH MORE better understanding of Brother Zachariah for when you read TMI.

Mary I highly suggest reading The Infernal Devices first it is helpful to read the books in this order because you are getting a chronological account of the events that take place throughout the time period.

J.C. Trust me if you don't read them in the order they were written you will be lost at the end of Clockwork Princess. She wrote them in the order she did for a reason and it makes them so much funnier if you read them the way she meant for them to be read.

Star Fouse \o/ Ty!

Kirstyn It's not necessary, but there are a lot of small connections between the series that you will find if you read TMI first.

Beate Actually, if I could go back I'd probably read TID first for some reason haha. You'd get all the references in TMI that you might read over hadn't you read TID o.O but it depends on personal preference I guess. You don't need to read it first to understand TID.

Isabell Here's a fun way to read both series with optimal results:
-City of Bones
-City of Ashes
-City of Glass
-Clockwork Angel
-City of Fallen Angels
-Clockwork Prince
-City of Lost Souls
-Clockwork Princess

Carolyn Patrick Read it in the order that they came out in. Trust me when i say theirs a reason.

Marisa Read the Mortal instruments first. You will be so confused if you read the prequel first.
