*For those who read TID and TMI* This is about the star mark that runs in the Herondale family...

I'm thinking it might be something of Ithuriel's mark or some sort. Stating that that Shadowhunter has been in the presence of or been touched my the angel himself. Since a part of Ithuriel's soul was in Tessa's clockwork angel, and Ithuriel was also the angel used to experiment on Jace and Clary.

Since a part of Ithuriel's soul..."I got my hands back on the book, and your right. It seems to be Ithuriel's mark. You know, it must really stink being Ithuriel. He was held captive for very large amounts of time... twice!
In City of Glass pg.513:
(Amatis to Jace)-"It's not a scar. It's a birthmark, or sorts, and a Herondale family secret. The story Stephen told me was that years ago, a Herondale ancestor encountered an angel. The angel touched him on the shoulder, and the touch left a mark like a star. It is the mark of one who has had contact with an angel. The mark was passed on through his blood: all of his descendants have it as well."
In Clockwork Princess pg.419:
(Tessa)-"She had fallen asleep with her head on his arm, the clockwork angel, still around her throat, resting against his shoulder, just to the left of his collarbone. As she moved away, the clockwork angel slipped free and she saw to her surprise that where it had lain against his skin it had left a mark behind, no bigger than a shilling, in the shape of a pale white star."
;D
I don't remember Clary having the mark. I thought Jace had the mark. That's how in TMI, the inquisitor , knew that he was really a Herondale.
Will got the mark after he slept with Tessa. The Clockwork angel was pressed against his skin and left a star-shaped mark. I wonder if Tessa also bore the same mark, for the clockwork angel might have pressed her skin more than it did Will.
It's all because of Ithuriel. Will got the mark when he slept with Tessa and her clockwork angel (with Ithuriel inside) touched his shoulder. The mark was obviously passed on.Clary got the mark because Jocelyn had angel blood when she was pregnant with Clary. If that's not the reason, then it's because Clary freed Ithuriel.
Hope this helped!
What about Tessa? I didn't recall reading about her having that mark. She has had the clockwork angel around her neck for long, and she imitated Ithuriel too. Speaking of Ithuriel. What a poor angel. How in heaven he was trapped twice? Did he have such a bad luck?
I know, right? Poor guy. I think, maybe, Tessa did have the mark and we never knew. Although I doubt Clare would skip out on a detail like that. I'm really not sure
I think the first mention of Clary's mark is in the greenhouse scene in City of Bones, right? When she shows it to Jace? So it couldn't be because she freed Ithuriel. Must be because of the angel blood I suppose. Otherwise her having the Herondale "birthmark" wouldn't make sense.
Which angel did Valentine get the blood for Jace and Clary from? He trapped poor Ithuriel in the Manor, long after the real Wayland passed away and Valentine disguised himself as him. If it was the same poor Ithuriel, where did he hide it without Jocelyn knowing that? How did a shadowhunter defeat an angel? It makes a bit of sense if it is Sebastian, after he consumed Lilith's soul, but for Valentine? He trapped and bled an angel (or 2 angels, if it was a different one for fetus Jace and Clary). Does it make any sense that a mere shadowhunter can overpower an angel??
no Tessa didnt have the mark but will did have the mark from the night they slept together so it was passed on through the bloodline. Clary also has the mark because it a mark from the angel and since she was injected with angel blood she has the mark as well
Also it was Ithuriel's soul that was in the clockwork angel necklace when it touched Will's shoulder. Tessa's part demon so that might be why she doesn't have the mark on her. Also Clary didn't just have any angel's blood in her, she had Ithuriel's blood in her so maybe that's why she and Will have the same mark. Because thet both were touched by the same angel.
I've pieced all this together through reading both series but what it DON'T get is : 1. Will got the scar from sleeping with Tess and the necklace resting on his shoulder but, how would all of his descendants have it if they themselves did not make contact with an angel?
2. Tess most likely doesn't have the mark because of her demon blood so how would her and Will's kids have it?

I think its because Clary was an experiment and was given Ithuriel's blood in powder form so it left a mark on her skin. Either that or she is has a very distant relation to Will Herondale? There are many shadowhunter last names that are recognizable to us: Wayland, Herondale, Carstairs, Lightwood, Verlac, Pennhallow, Fairchild, Branwell, Graymark, Starkweather, Cartwright, Blackthorn, Morgenstern, Trueblood, etc... Most of them marry other shadowhunters and through the generations, one would think that some people are all distantly related to one another.

My guess is that it has something to do with angelic powers which we are only knowledgeable of through Cassie Clare.
the mark is from being in contact with and angel and because Tessa is half demon i don't think it would work on her
Olivia wrote: "Brittney wrote: "I'm thinking it might be something of Ithuriel's mark or some sort. Stating that that Shadowhunter has been in the presence of or been touched my the angel himself. Why was Will 'blessed' with the mark? He slept with Tessa, so he was touched by Ithuriel? They weren't even married at that time. Isn't angelic stuff related to something holy? What was the purpose? For the Herondales to have a certain mark for them to be recognised? Jace might get an advantage of this, since Imogen did sacrifice herself for Jace after she realised who Jace is from his mark. But what had it done for Will and his descendants?
did william notice that he had a pale star-shape mark because of he slept with tessa? do we know something about it?
Will got the scar because he was touches by Ithuriel in Tessa's necklace.Jace got the scar because the mark was passed through Herondale generations.
Clary got the scar because the blood of Ithuriel was used in Valentine's "experiments" on her.
Guys. It's easy.

Clary got the scar because the blood of Ithu..."
Thank you! It is not really that hard!!!!
*SPOILER*Anyway, i assume that the Herondales got their mark from when Tessa shifted into her angel.
So. Jace got his scar because he is a Herondale.
Clary has it because she has angel blood... or more likely because she met Ithuriel. Or that other angel that killed Valentine.
Will (and Jace) has the mark because Will slept with Tessa and her necklace touched his shoulder. Clary (probably) has it because her mom had the angel blood while pregnant with Clary. It's not because she met Ithuriel. They never touched and Clary already had the mark before she met the angel. (check the greenhouse scene in city of bones) also I think jocelyn has the mark on her hand...but i have to double check on that. (city of glass when jocelyn is awake and tells clary the full story in alicante)
Jocelyn mentioned that when she was pregnant with Clary (just not sure whether Jocelyn is aware of the pregnancy already), Valentine would sometimes give her food that might have powdered angel blood on it or something, but that's how Clary got angel blood, I guess.
Okay I think after everything that Clary and Jace are actually related distannnnttt. Spoiler. Tessa is Jace's so many greats grandma. Well what if on Clary's mom's mom side, Nightshade, they are related to the Starkweathers since Tess is actually a Starkweather. That means Clary would be born with the scar just like Jace getting it from the Herondale side.
adding to my last comment in Clockwork Princess it says that Adele , Aloysius Starkweather's daughter, is really the real Elizabeth Gray's name. Adele is Clary's mom's mom's name along with Clary's middle name. That kind if pushed me, along with her and her mom both have the star scar, that on Clary's grandmothers side are related to the little known Starkweather side.
They got the scar through contact with the angel. I think that Tessa has the mark and passed it on to their children. Clary got her because when Jocelyn drank the angel blood, she then had contact with the angel, therefore got the angels mark.
If I'm right, Clary got the angel's mark when she brought Jace back in the City of Glass. Remember Raziel brushed his arm/wing against her and erased the runes? Well the only way (if I'm correct) that you can get the mark is by being touched by an angel. So that explains how Clary got it. Will got the mark when Tessa's clockwork angel was laying on his shoulder while they slept. Keep in mind, an angel was trapped in the tiny angel. However...it still was a regular angel so it's touch could leave such a mark.
No. Clary already had the mark in the first book. She showed Jace and thought it was from "the chicken pox."
ahh...Ithuriel the wimpy angel...he gets trapped in a necklace once and then abused, tortured, bleeded dry and left to rot by a crazy shadow hunter. Who knows, those marks may be his own form of wimpy revenge.
From Cassandra Clare's livejournal:14) Why does Clary have a scar like Jace's? Does that mean they really are related?
No. It doesn't.
I went back and forth about whether to answer this, because it is, actually, answered in the book, and I feel like — even though it's something you might miss while reading very fast — you guys are smart enough to figure it out from the presented evidence as explained to Jace by Amatis in the epilogue. So I'll go over the evidence again:
1) Jace's scar is not a scar. It's a birthmark.
2) The mark indicates that the marked person has had contact with an angel, or that they are the descendant of someone who has had contact with an angel.
3) The mark, therefore, is hereditary.
4) Valentine has had contact with an angel. We have seen this in the angel's memories.
5) Clary is therefore the descendant of someone who has had contact with an angel. Just like Jace.

Then if it's because you have contact with an Angel shouldn't Simon or Simon's kids someday have a mark? Even though it's not the same Angel as the the one Jace and Clary had contact with? Or does it exclude Simon because he was a vampire when he got in contact with the Angel?

Maybe only shadowhunters can acquire mark like that. That would explain why Tessa nor Simon have it, because Tessa is half shadowhunter, half demon, and Simon was a vampire at that time when he summoned Raziel. And it makes sense because shadowhunters are half angels and half humans. I know that Tessa is half shadowhunter, but her angel blood is only 1/3 of her blood, because she also has a blood of demon and blood of human, so maybe that angel part is not strong enough for her to acquire that mark

*Sorry if the answer to this is really obvious, I guess it is time to re-read the books... again ;D, not that I have a problem with that, hahaha)
