Robyn (seawitchrecovers) | 50 comments Hi Everyone :)

What does the Amazon take-over mean for She-Geeks? Think the group will remain, or maybe move to Facebook??

Z○e *♥ItsGreekForLife♥* (ItsGreekForLife) I hope it remains, I need a Facebook still. D:

Donna Riley-lein | 3 comments not sure. don't like much of Amazon's practices but will watch & wait. will NOT be posting new reviews for now.

Rebecca (flusen) | 117 comments goodreads is being taken over by amazon? I didn't even know.
It sounds like don't want to change a lot, so I guess I don't really mind that much. We'll see how it's really gonna be in the end...
If it would move to facebook, I wouldn't really mind, either, but I guess it's less convenient?!

just wait and see before panicking...

Kelly (xitomatl) Hmmm. I just heard about this here and am not overly pleased. We will now have a publisher/bookseller in charge of a website that has provided an even playing field to all publishers/authors/etc. How long will that once-even playing field last? I'd say Amazon would have a vested interest in highlighting their own products, books, etc..

I also might not want everything I publish here (reviews, etc.) to be allowed to be posted on Amazon, and it's at least a likely possibility the two would be integrated.

Obviously the website will become very Kindle friendly and heavy as well - I don't have a Kindle nor would ever use a Kindle because I don't like their proprietary software.

This begs the question as well - we are able to, with the click of a button, search up books on tons of websites to see what prices they offer. I imagine this will be done away with quite quickly.

They can say "independent" all they like, but I'm skeptical at best that some of the things I highlighted above won't be done away with. It's just good business sense.

Unfortunately, I don't use Facebook, so I would hate to see this group migrate over there.

Geeky Like (smirking_revenge) | 5 comments I wonder if it would be similar to shelfari which is where I kept all my reads until about...oh a few months ago which was amazon based.

My only worry would be that I dont want my reviews to be published on amazon unless I want them to be.

This is a big worry for me as well - I'm not one of those people that are very anti-Amazon, but I am anti-me-doing-the-work-so-you-make-money, which is exactly what Amazon would be doing if they snag reviews for their site.

Hopefully they'll post some kind of warning if they do plan to do that, so I can take down my reviews before then.

As a side note: if we do see a mass-exodus from this group, I recommend LibraryThing to move the group to. If it comes to that of course.

Lianne (eclecticreading) It's too bad that GoodReads is no longer an independent website and I don't like the idea of my reviews ending up on Amazon (unless, as others mentioned, I want them to be there). I'm also not a Kindle user (I have a Kobo) so I wonder how this "Kindle-friendly" approach from Amazon & GR will affect my use of the website. But yeah, I'm on "wait and see" mode in the meantime xD

If the group moves, I second Kelly's recommendation on LibraryThing =)

Rebecca (flusen) | 117 comments What bothers me about LibraryThing is that you'd have to pay if you wanted to organise more than 200 books. :/ I'm not against having to spend money for a larger library per se but 200 is less than what I have in my actual bookshelf at home so I'd have to go there knowing I couldn't even shelve all my current books!

By the way, are reviews from shelfari published to amazon (directly)?

They're actually extending a free year's paid account to GR refugees at this point, they just did that with me. I'm totally willing to pay their very reasonable rates ($10 for a year, or $25 for a lifetime membership) if I like the system, which so far I very much am.

Of course I have a bunch of groups and friends here on GR now, so unless everybody migrates, I'm sticking with both. I'm like Lianne, "let's wait and see".

Not that I have ever known. I just checked two of the last reviews I published over on Shelfari and couldn't find them over on amazon. Just in case it was happening without my knowledge or my indirect permission.

Same here, I still use GR first and foremost but I'm using LT as a sort of back-up. If anything, it's keeping my procrastination entertained by re-organising my shelves there xP

Rebecca (flusen) | 117 comments Ah, I see, maybe I should try it after all. ;)

And I was thinking: If they don't even put shelfari reviews up why should they put GR reviews up? But... wait and see, I guess.
