Other classics that are as suspenseful

I just reread A Tale (having read it in high school). I loved it then. I love it now. I can think of few books that compare. Can anyone recommend another "classic" (something that would be required reading in high school or the like) that is as suspenseful? Count of Monte Cristo is quite close (I've read it 4 times) in terms of quality and suspense and "classicness". Anything else along those lines? I'd be especially glad to find another classic that deals with revenge. I find that to be such an intriguing topic.

Victor Hugo's works are pretty similar to Charles Dickens'. I highly recommend Les Misérables and L'homme Qui Rit.

Have you read The Man in the Iron Mask?

I'd have to recommend Rebecca.

'The Beautiful and Damned' by Fitzgerald
'20,000 Leagues Under the Sea' by Verne (satisfying revengeful ending)
'Gormenghast Trilogy' by Mervyn Peake (revenge to make you writhe in anticipation)
'My Cousin Rachel' by Daphne DuMaurier
'Notes from the Underground' - Fyodor Doyesteovsky
Try some Gothic tales: 'Castle of Otranto'; 'Vathek'; 'The History of Rasselas'
Edgar Allen Poe's stories and tales are replete with revenge themes
Chaucer's 'Canterbury Tales' and Boccaccio's 'Decameron' may have some
'Treasure Island', 'The Master of Ballantrae', & 'Black Arrow' by Robert Louis Stevenson
theatre: plays by Eugene O'Neill, Moliere, Wilde
'The Sea Wolf' by Jack London

i love all of the above books

The mysteries of Udolpho by Anne Radcliffe. I read this after Monte Cristo. Loved it. Not specifically revenge.

Lady Audley's secret by Mary Braddon. Missing friend
My cousin Rachel by Du Maurier. Possibly murdered relative.
The Woman in Black by Susan Hill. Adopted dead child.

And not a classic--A Game of Thrones by Geroge RR Martin. Seems like every character ends up with something to avenge-awesome series.

Dracula by Bram Stoker, perhaps?

1984 by George Orwell (pretty standard), and though I wouldn't say it's suspenseful all the time, the ending of The Heart is a Lonely Hunter by Carson McCullers was crazy.
