Message 2 simply shows a worldwide flag counter and since we just set it up a few hours ago - we are impressed that it is counting all new visitors and countries to our site. As time goes on, I would imagine that this counter will become quite impressive. You only have to click on the counter to get more details about the flags and the countries they represent.

This counter has been viewed 80,914 times by 40,381 visitors! - as of August 24, 2013

Where can I find a translation of the country abbreviations? Most of them I can figure out, but there are some obscure ones there. Love the info and graphic.

Iran

For those of you looking at the Flag Map and seeing all of the adds around and in the Middle East - one country you may not see the flag of is Iran. I do hope that things change there for the better in the near future but right now I doubt folks will be able to get through to goodreads from Iran. Goodreads noticed this censorship in 2010. Here is the posting:

Goodreads now blocked in Iran

Posted by Jessica on February 11, 2010 (Goodreads staff member)

For several years, Goodreads has been flying under the radar of the Iranian government, which has a track record of blocking their citizens' access to information on the web.

News broke yesterday that Iran will begin blocking Gmail. Among our 3 million members, we are happy to have 114,031 Iranian members who have added 714,626 books to their shelves.

As reported by the Los Angeles Times in 2008, Goodreads has provided an online forum where Iranians participate not only in robust discussions of literature, but also, by natural extension, healthy debates about politics.

We have been proud to provide this safe space for honest opinions.

Last Friday, February 5, 2010, we were saddened to see Goodreads traffic in Iran plummet (screenshot at left), which can only mean that Goodreads has joined the ranks of sites blocked by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's regime.

One Iranian Goodreads member wrote to us and confirmed the news: "your site is recently been filtered by our horrible govrnmt. pls help us! spread it...books make no harm."

We couldn't agree more. Books make no harm.

In an interview last year, Goodreads Author Azar Nafisi, author of Reading Lolita in Tehran, commented presciently on the Iranian phenomenon on Goodreads: "People constantly find ways of connecting.

If [Goodreads] is banned in Iran, we need support for those people who just want to connect to the world." Please spread the word that books should be enjoyed, discussed, and shared by everyone.

==================

Another good book to read:

Reading Lolita in Iran

Reading Lolita in Tehran by Azar Nafisi by Azar NafisiAzar Nafisi

Synopsis:

Every Thursday morning for two years in the Islamic Republic of Iran, a bold and inspired teacher named Azar Nafisi secretly gathered seven of her most committed female students to read forbidden Western classics. As Islamic morality squads staged arbitrary raids in Tehran, fundamentalists seized hold of the universities, and a blind censor stifled artistic expression, the girls in Azar Nafisi's living room risked removing their veils and immersed themselves in the worlds of Jane Austen, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Henry James, and Vladimir Nabokov. In this extraordinary memoir, their stories become intertwined with the ones they are reading. Reading Lolita in Tehran is a remarkable exploration of resilience in the face of tyranny and a celebration of the liberating power of literature.

UPDATE: I just want to say that since I posted this note that we have had visitors from Iran and we welcome them with open arms. I wish we could have more.

Just as an FYI - a computer and IP address are only counted once - so if you are a member of the History Book Club - you were only counted the first time you came to the History Book Club site after the counter was working. There is a cookie that is added as well so you are verified as unique only once.

If you come 10 times a day, you were only counted once on the first day. All of the counts are unique visitors.

At the bottom of the counter you will see the page views. Now the page views are the views that all group members and visitors have viewed since the counter was installed. So that will go up daily and all of the pages viewed will be counted. And you will see beside it - the number of country flags we have secured.

Also at the bottom of the flag counter - the first flag will show you and your country location while the second flag will be the last new flag counted.

No there really isn't - for the other countries they point out only other regions/provinces, etc. (sort of like a county in the United States) - but for the United States - they just give a state.

It would be interesting to see the proportion of visitors/members to the population of the states. For instance, California, New York and Texas are the most populous states as well as the top of our list. Sadly, I'm too lazy to do the math right now.

Our latest country has been Rwanda.

Our flag counter on this site does not show all of our visitors or even hardly any of our new visitors because goodreads does not handle the traffic directly so that the counter can count. It is sad because we have hundreds of visitors to the site every day. The Goodreads software has been getting in the way of the counter counting since October 2013.

However I will keep you posted of the accurate statistics.

The image at the top of our site on a computer is not up to date. If you go in from a mobile device - it shows the correct numbers but even then the counter has not been able to count properly.

Right now 170 countries have visited and joined The History Book Club. - according to our accurate access.

Remember the counter only enumerates new visitors so once somebody has come to the site - they are not logged in as new but as a person who has revisited. The numbers only show "new visitors".

Worldwide Visitors:

Here is an update of our unique visitors as of April 11, 2018 - the date to the right shows the last date of a brand new visitor from that specific country with a unique IP address to our group site. This number does not include additional visits by any of these members who are already counted - once the previous global members are counted the first time - they are counted only that once - no matter how many times they visit or post. In other words - the first time you come to the site - you are counted - if you come every day for the next ten years - you are only counted that first time as a "unique visitor" and do not show up in the count or that country again.
