Talk about your portfolios and discuss the genre and media you work with here.

Randall | 3 comments My apologies for asking this here but I cannot seem to contact you any other way. You mentioned typically illustrating fantasy and historical fiction, but would animals, cats mostly be something you feel comfortable drawing?

Mark (MBStudiosArt) | 2 comments Hello everyone. My name is Mark Branscum and I have a question to Authors out there that are looking for an illustrator.

I am a seasoned and highly skilled Fine Artist but secretly for years I have a wonderful, magical, mysterious, funny and of course very happy characters that are wanting to find their way to children's hearts.

So I am in search of finding that author that desires their dream to come to life and mine to illustrate books.

My website is my portfolio as to my artistic skills so this brings me to my question

I have shared what I am looking for so, are you looking for me???

Randy | 2 comments Hello all! I am new to this group, and was very excited to find it. I've been trying to get into illustrating for authors for quite some time. Anyone interested, please contact me. I can do everything from children's books to horror and everywhere in between. Thank You for considering me.

message 6: by Derek (new)

Derek (Sirius3333) | 6 comments Heya! I'm a twenty two year old kid who has had a caste of characters (still cementing the story) for a comical manga! I'm a totally amateur writer, I don't even know what a portfolio is. I'm looking for help on getting my stuff public!

message 7: by Dave (new)

Dave | 3 comments Hi, I'm new here. This group, by the way, was a great idea! Why didn't I think of this? I'll forever question myself now (kidding).
I'm a painter/illustrator. On my own time I work in an oil/wax emulsion that I make in my studio. I like to work on large canvases (3'-6') with a painful amount of detail so that when you come close to the work it loses nothing.
Due to time constraints I illustrate using acrylics or I'll do some oil/turp washes and then add to this in Photoshop. I like to work differently just about every time, really. This not only keeps the job exciting but also keeps my brain flexible and healthy.
I've illustrated two children's books, have written/illustrated my own comic book and I'm currently rewriting/illustrating a children's book that I've had lying around on my hard drive for some time now. There's another book that I have just started writing for my four year old daughter based on a story I told her while she was in the hospital due to a snake bite (copperhead). All of this on top of a couple of painting commissions. The key to a long life is to stay busy!
Like I mentioned above, I work in oils, acrylics, Adobe Photoshop, brush & ink, charcoal, pastels ect ect. I'm a total art geek! There's always a sketchbook on me somewhere.
Oh, and you all probably want some sample work too
You can find it here-

http://shownd.com/groshelle

I'm looking for a bit of illustration work, not only to fund my own projects but also because I enjoy working with other people's ideas and watching them light up when they see the illustrations.

BTW Derek, a portfolio is a compilation of an artist's work to show a potential client their level of expertise, styles they work in, and also the artist's preferred mediums (oils, acrylics, pastels ect). All of this so said client can decide if this is the artist he/she wishes to hire.

S.J. Hollis (sjhollis) I totally recommend Lawrence Mann. He is incredible

This is the cover he just designed for me: http://uninv1ted.livejournal.com/6821...

The thing about Lawrence is that not only is he incredibly talented, he listens to you. You talk about your story and he'll tell that story right there on the cover. I'm so happy with the work he's done for Bounty Hunter and I know the cover will help me generate sales.

Lawrence is friendly and I've found as a newbie author, his guidance has been invaluable. He's given me a ton of advice. This guy knows his stuff. He works with indies, publishers, big companies like Sony, the BBC, Channel 4, everyone. And I know he loves us indies!

YA, SF, Fantasy, crime, horror... Take a look at his portfolio.

I've had a great experience with Lawrence and I will be using him for book two!

message 18: by Lars (last edited Aug 18, 2013 10:34AM) (new)

Lars Grant-west | 1 comments Hi!

I'm a fantasy illustrator, also interested in sci-fi and horror. I've recently been doing more cover work for self published authors, and have found it very interesting to work directly with authors.

My philosophy is this - Even a brilliant writer won't be read if no one picks up their book in the first place.

Your book's cover is the hook that gets it seen, sampled, and hopefully read voraciously ever after. The illustrator's job is to bait the hook...then it's your job as an author to reel them in.

Please feel free to contact me with questions. My rates vary by complexity of the image, but I'm happy to have that discussion with you.

Best of luck and good fortune with whatever projects you're working on,
Lars Grant-West

George Kramer | 1 comments Hi!
I'm new here and very excited!
I would like to be honest and upfront from the start. I have absolutely no money. I am seeking someone in the Indianapolis area to do the illustrations that would receive a percentage of the profit. If that doesn't sound like something you are eager to take on, I will understand. BUT I have this
FANTASTIC storyline based on two novellas I wrote in the science fantasy genre.
I have two more in my head eager to come alive on my computer.
I want to convert the books into graphic novels but don't possess the drawing ability to do so.
Everyone that's read them said it would make an excellent graphic novel.
My goal is to have them ready by next year's Indiana Comic Con.
Please email me and let me know either way.
Thank you for your time!
Regards,
George Kramer

Jacquelyn Quinn | 1 comments Hey all! My name is Jacki. I'm actually more of a children's book writer but I can't get motivated to illustrate my own books! It's sad but I think it's because of the sheer number of books that I have written up, about 50 short stories. Anyway, I'd love to work with a writer to illustrate THEIR stories for them. I love traditional mediums such as anything that can be donw on paper. If you're looking for digital art, well then, I am not the one you want. Seriously. Unless you'd like to og back to MS Paint days ;)
Here's a link to my deviant art page. I've got vaaaarious styles and can be very flexible. All I need is inspirations and I'll go bananas on whatever it is you want. http://quinnquelyn.deviantart.com/

Lynn | 5 comments Hi! I am looking for illustrators who are ebook savvy who would be willing to illustrate pro bono for Children's Books (all rhyming and samples which I could send to see if you are interested). Should we sell ebooks, compensation would be 60%illustrator, 40%writer. Nothing plus nothing equals nothing. Doing something gives us both a chance at something. Thank you! Contact Lynn at lyricallynn1@verizon.net.

Cheryl McGonigle (cherylkmcgonigle) | 2 comments Hi Everyone
Just found this group and glad I did.
I am a children's book author and published my first book doing my own illustrations. I have a couple of other books I want to publish but would like to have someone else do the illustrations. So maybe some of you illustrators can help. I was wondering, what does it cost to hire an illustrator? Do you pay per illustration? Do you ever collaborate with the author to share in the profits? Any information would be helpful to me and probably others who would like to hire an illustrator. I realize that every situation is different but just some averages would be great.
Thanks Cheryl
