What are the qualities that make a fictional character memorable? Give some examples and what makes them stand out from the pack?

Scout, in To Kill a Mockingbird has a curiosity, toughness, quick intellect and a willingness to listen and learn that is hard to beat. She'll argue herself blue if she believes in something and yet sit at her father's knee and listen for hours when she's interested. But it doesn't stop there. She soaks up knowledge like a sponge from Calpurnia, who is another great, wise-cracking, warm and engaging character. They both surprise you, the reader.
