I was desperate to see what was so outstanding about this hard-to-get book that earned it a place on the list, so I ordered it direct. I think that's the only way to get it? At first I was a little underwhelmed. It's not sensationalistic, more like a quiet look at a terrible problem. The large photographs capture the lonely space around the children, the cold attentiveness to their movements that lacks the warmth of empathy. The racism is impossible to miss. I'm glad the Alex committee plucked this up for their award - I never would have found it on my own.
I can't find this book anywhere! Our library is part of a statewide consortium, and NO ONE has a copy of this book. I might have to resort to looking at it in a Barnes & Noble, if they even carry it. :/
