Vi | 404 comments Hi Barbara! Let me know when you receive the book. I have it on hand so I'm good to go anytime.

Barbara ★ | 1873 comments Yeah finally. The library called and it is available for pickup today so I will grab it tonight. I'm in the middle of a 700 page book so I'd rather start on Saturday. Would that be ok?

Also how do you want to do it? Read a set number of chapters per day or a certain number of pages per day. In all honestly I guess you could do either one just mark your comments with a spoiler tag along with chapter number (um I think they are named not numbered) and page. What do you think?

Barbara ★ | 1873 comments Oh it looks like you put DIA on hold. Why don't we start tomorrow then instead of Saturday? I'll just put my book about Antarctica on hold until we finish.

message 5: by Vi (new) - rated it 4 stars

Vi | 404 comments Barbara, I don't mind waiting till Saturday. It's only two more days away. I'm okay either way.

There no chapter number but names. Maybe we could one round of names each? It'll be much easier tracking them than pages. What do you think?

Barbara ★ | 1873 comments I finished the book I was reading and will start this tomorrow.

We can try it that way though I think it's going to get confusing. I have a paperback copy with 969 pages excluding the appendices.

Here are the discussion questions that were posed by the NBRC group.
http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/5...

I usually read 200-300 pages per day but that is too much if we plan to discuss. What do you think of working through the questions? I can post each "day" here and then we can both respond with spoiler tags. Then go onto the next set of chapters.

Barbara ★ | 1873 comments Here's the first set but DO NOT READ as there will be spoilers!!!

Questions for Prologue - Chapter 3 (Tyrion)
(view spoiler)

message 8: by Barbara ★ (last edited Mar 13, 2013 07:11PM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Barbara ★ | 1873 comments After you read chapter 3 (Tyrion), copy the questions and post your responses under a spoiler tag.

Then if you finish before I do, copy the next set of questions and add the spoiler tag.

Just make sure that the chapter/name isn't hidden under the spoiler tag so we can each read and respond at our own pace.

How does that sound?

message 9: by Vi (last edited Mar 13, 2013 11:28PM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Vi | 404 comments Lol! I did some of the questions! I totally forgot. Thankfully, we have access to the questions.

I usually read the same amount too - we can probably do two sets per day but as you said, as and when we read each set, we'll do the answering also. ThAt sounds good.

Two things though:
1. I'm in Singapore right now so I'm exactly 12 hours ahead of you.
2. Since I just shifted here, I only have my iPad with me right now. Don't have my laptop yet. ETA: which means no fancy HTML much. Too irritating in iPad.

message 10: by Barbara ★ (last edited Mar 15, 2013 10:09AM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Barbara ★ | 1873 comments No worries. As long as you (and I) just use the spoiler tags, nothing will be spoiled. haha

Read at your own pace but just make sure the chapter/name line is OUTSIDE the tag so we don't get a nasty surprise. lol

If you can't do the tag thingie, just write *********SPOILER********** (or something similar) after the chapter/name line so I know to be careful.

When I saw NBRC was doing a group read, I copied the links for all books when I started reading the first one. Feel free to copy the tag if you read it with someone else.

A Storm of Swords (NBRC)
A Feast for Crows (NBRC)
A Dance with Dragons (NBRC)

You'll have to search for the questions though since on the first few chapters are at the top.

Barbara ★ | 1873 comments I was suitably confused to start as I read the first book some time last summer and honestly forgot the particulars. I remember the big stuff but the little details have escaped me. I thought it was just me until I read the first question. Now I remember why I loved this series. GRRM is a terrific author who makes you feel what he writes as well as experience each and every thing that happens to all the characters.

Questions: Prologue - Chapter 3 (Tyrion)

message 12: by Barbara ★ (last edited Mar 15, 2013 04:50AM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Barbara ★ | 1873 comments Well I made it to chapter 12 Daenerys. So far I really like the story but wonder where the hell it's going.

Questions: Chapter 4 (Bran) - Chapter 7 (Catelyn)
(view spoiler)

Questions: Chapter 8 (Tyrion) - Chapter 11 (Theon)
(view spoiler)

I'm not very good at reading between the lines and with this book it's doubly hard as GRRM is unpredictable. I was caught off guard quite a few times in AGoT and I'm expecting to be here also. Daenerys was my favorite character from AGoT and I can't wait to get back to her story.

message 13: by Vi (new) - rated it 4 stars

Vi | 404 comments I started it today but i got side tracked. I have some catching up to do. Be back tomorrow with my answers.

Barbara ★ | 1873 comments That's ok. I read through Chapter 15 and now I'm going to read a little bit of something else. Maybe tonight I'll get back to ACoK.

I'm still trying to figure out how Daenerys is a contender for the crown with only 100 people. I guess it'll be explained eventually.

Do you remember from AGoT who Gendry is or why Cersei is after him? Was he there when Eddard was killed? The Queen is obviously after him but I can't seem to place him or remember his story.

Question: for Chapter 12(Daenerys) - Chapter 15(Thyrion)
(view spoiler)

message 15: by Vi (new) - rated it 4 stars

Vi | 404 comments Gendry is some smith's apprentice right? If i remember correctly, Ned Stark found him and I *think* he's a bastard son of King Robert. If I remember correctly.

Vi | 404 comments Barbara, I have an emergency. We just discovered that my dad has heart blockage and that we need to do two angioplasty with shent. It's so sudden that we are shocked and I'm flying back India ASAP. I'll be MIA for a while and I don't think I can get any reading done. I'll try to update you when I can. But I cannot seem to concentrate on anything right now.

I'm sorry about this

Barbara ★ | 1873 comments Good lord don't worry about this - family must come first. I hope all goes well with your dad.

I'm going to continue the buddy read and when your crisis is over maybe we can discuss. No worries though, it'll keep.

Barbara ★ | 1873 comments Vi wrote: "Gendry is some smith's apprentice right? If i remember correctly, Ned Stark found him and I *think* he's a bastard son of King Robert. If I remember correctly."

You are so right here. He is one of Robert's bastards. That explains a lot.

Barbara ★ | 1873 comments Wow I'm really loving this book. It's so interesting and exciting yet evil abounds as well. I find GRRM's mind amazing. It is impossible to guess what is going to happen and that makes for a truly suspenseful read.

Vi | 404 comments Hi Barbara! Sorry, I couldn't get in earlier. Dad was successfully discharged last Friday but he has to bed rest for a while. He's not used to such idle time and its driving him mad.

I'm somewhere around chapter 27 so I'm going to start answering questions from then on. But I'm sooo liking Tyrion now.

Barbara ★ | 1873 comments I'm so glad to hear that your Dad is going to be ok. It's scary when our parents are sick. My mother died of cancer 8 years ago and it was a terrible time.

I've liked Tyrion all along. I'm thinking he had to "be bad" just to fit into the family and be accepted (as little as they accepted him) but he seems to have goodness inside unlike the rest of the family who surely don't.

I finished ACoK last night at midnight. There was just no way I was going to bed without reading the last 100 pages. Oh man was the end exciting though I will admit that the actual fighting at King's Landing was boring and repetitive. All in all an excellent book and I can't wait to start reading A Storm of Swords: Blood and Gold though it's going to have to wait since I'm over-committed in both April and May.

Barbara ★ | 1873 comments Ok maybe I'll have to fit A Storm of Swords: Blood and Gold into April somehow because I will forget all the little points if I don't continue soon. Darn gotta rearrange some things.

Wanna read it with me?

ETA: oops wrong book. this is the one A Storm of Swords (A Song of Ice and Fire, #3) by George R.R. Martin

message 29: by Vi (new) - rated it 4 stars

Vi | 404 comments I've got access to a good laptop now! YAY!! I'm going to start answering some. Only a 100 pages left and I don't want to put the book down.

Barbara - doesn't A Storm of Swords: Steel and Snow come first? This series page says so.. I would LOVE to read it with you.

Barbara ★ | 1873 comments I didn't know there were two books entitled A Storm of Swords. I'll have to check it out.

Barbara ★ | 1873 comments I have no idea what Blood and Gold / Steel and Snow are. I just clicked on the first book that came up titled a storm of swords. I have on hand A Storm of Swords (A Song of Ice and Fire, #3) by George R.R. Martin which doesn't have a subtitle but has 1179 pages. Which edition do you have?

Barbara ★ | 1873 comments Vi wrote: "I've got access to a good laptop now! YAY!! I'm going to start answering some. Only a 100 pages left and I don't want to put the book down."

It IS great isn't it? I just love this series. All the ups and downs, the triumphs and disasters, the treachery and betrayals and the setup of future incidents. It's just amazing!

Barbara ★ | 1873 comments Do you want to do it the same way...answer the questions asked? I could copy the questions to our BR post to make it easier. Or would you rather do it another way? Either way is ok with me. When would you like to start? I just need to read it in April so whatever date works for you is good. Just let me know.

I'm keeping the questions/answers in a separate thread so I can reference back if need be so I'm answering the questions as I read since my short term memory sucks and I just can't remember the particulars.

message 34: by Vi (new) - rated it 4 stars

Vi | 404 comments Oh I thought you bough the versions where it was split into two.

I'm flexible for April since I haven't made plans yet. I have Dragonfly in Amber (Outlander, #2) by Diana Gabaldon which I'll be getting to today/tomorrow. So, a week for that would be my earliest to start. Let me know when you would like to start. I have the book on hand.

The question/answer thing is good since it sometimes make me aware of the things I missed. I remember the major things but smaller things I forgot from the first book. Like Lyanna, Catelyn and Brandon Stark thingy etc. Only after I read the book, it jolted that incident back.

Barbara ★ | 1873 comments Vi wrote: "The question/answer thing is good since it sometimes make me aware of the things I missed. That's why I like the questions too.

I'm good whenever so when you finish DiA let me know.

message 36: by Vi (new) - rated it 4 stars

Vi | 404 comments Barbara, do you want to do it here or as a seperate new thread? I asked Jenne to create a new one but if you'd rather do it here, then I'll ask her to delete the other one.

I'm thinking next week, 8 March? I'll be starting DiA today and a week is more than sufficient. Will that work? I'm pretty flexible though.

Barbara ★ | 1873 comments We can do it on another thread. I didn't even check. I'll just move these question posts over there.

next week works fine, Monday the 8th is good.
