Belladonna (~Miriam Daisy Rose~) (miriamdaisyrose) | 25 comments Ruta (aka Dotty, which is what I'll call her from here on out), lead her sister into the school, hand in hand. Simon and Theodor followed behind them, looking nervous for their sister but at the same time blissfully having a good time going on an adventure. She was wearing her best clothes (which are the ones in the first picture of the character profile), and even they were noticeably worn out. The kids all had shoes on, though none of them were their own. The night before they had scrounged up ones that fit for Wilma's first day of school. Dotty looked down and gave her nervous little sister a reassuring smile, gently squeezing her hand.

Belladonna (~Miriam Daisy Rose~) (miriamdaisyrose) | 25 comments Dotty knelt down (which was getting harder to do with the pregnancy), and looked Wilma in the eyes reassuringly. She adjusted the collar of the young girl's dress as she spoke. "Ok, sweetie. That's your new classroom. Are you ready?" "Yeah." Both Dotty and Wilma had thick Polish accents. "You are going to have such good time at school- you will learn to speak English better than me, even!" The girl smiled faintly. Dotty continued. "Remember, don't speak in Polish to the other children. The won't understand you, and it's.. eh, how you say? Lekceważący, to speak so they can't understand you." The English word she was searching for was 'rude'. Wilma nodded. "Are you ready?" She nodded again, nervousness written all over her face. Dotty gave her a big smile. "Smile, now... there, just be your nice, kind self. See, aren't you the prettiest thing with a smile on your face?" This caused Wilma to giggle, and Dotty straightened up, leading her to the door. The teacher came and talked to her for a minute, then welcomed Wilma into the classroom. Waving goodbye to Wilma, Dotty and the boys left. Wilma looked around at the classroom, at all the other children, a very nervous smile on her face.

Anastacia (ana3) | 14 comments Molly watched the new girl come into the class room and ran over to her "Hi I'm Molly" She smiled widely.

Belladonna (~Miriam Daisy Rose~) (miriamdaisyrose) | 25 comments Wilma smiled genuinely at Molly's happy greeting. "Hi, I'm Wilma" She said, with a thick Polish accent.

message 19: by Anastacia (new)

Anastacia (ana3) | 14 comments "Come sit with Johnny and me" She said and took Wilma's hand. She didn't care that Wilma had an accent as long as the other girl wanted to be her friend.

Belladonna (~Miriam Daisy Rose~) (miriamdaisyrose) | 25 comments "Okay." Wilma gratefully followed Molly. She felt accepted, and was relieved. She was still nervous, but many of her fears began slipping away.

message 21: by Anastacia (new)

Anastacia (ana3) | 14 comments Molly sat down in the middle seat Johnny on her right side and Wilma on her left. "Would you like a cookie?" Molly asked as she grabbed her bag and got the last 3 cookies out.

Belladonna (~Miriam Daisy Rose~) (miriamdaisyrose) | 25 comments "Yes, thank you." Wilma answered, politely. She had never seen cookies like the ones Molly had before. This was kind of exciting.

message 23: by Anastacia (new)

Anastacia (ana3) | 14 comments Molly handed her one "Momma made them" She smiled and bit in to her cookie. "She makes the best cookies" Molly said after finishing her bite.

Belladonna (~Miriam Daisy Rose~) (miriamdaisyrose) | 25 comments Wilma took a small bite. It tasted really good. She smiled and nodded her agreement.

message 25: by Anastacia (new)

Anastacia (ana3) | 14 comments Molly giggled "Wanna be my friend?" She asked after taking a second bite of her cookie.

Belladonna (~Miriam Daisy Rose~) (miriamdaisyrose) | 25 comments Wilma nodded. And, she decided to herself, tonight she would ask Dotty to help her make some cookies that she could bring in and share.

Belladonna (~Miriam Daisy Rose~) (miriamdaisyrose) | 25 comments Wilma squirmed in her seat a bit as she looked around at the rest of the class. Most of the kids, thankfully, weren't paying any attention to her. She took the last bite of her cookie.

Astig0921 Will walked into the class and smiled at all the kids that he saw. Behind him traveled Apollo. Will placed his books on his desk and got things organized he wrote on the board. Mr. Baker He turned around to face the class and clapped his hands loud to get the attention of the whole class. He smiled and greeted them in a kind voice, "Hello class! Some of you may already know me from last year and hello to any of you who might be new. I Am Mr. Baker or Mr. B. Now lets begin class with a get to know each other session." He handed out papers to the class that had them write down things about them like names, family, favorite thing to do...ect. He took a seat in his chair and waited for the class to fill out the papers. As they did so he started to read his book.

message 29: by Belladonna (~Miriam Daisy Rose~) (last edited May 01, 2013 12:40PM) (new)

Belladonna (~Miriam Daisy Rose~) (miriamdaisyrose) | 25 comments Wilma stared down at the paper, her eyes very big, her arms plastered to her sides. She had no clue how to write in English! She knew how to write a little bit in Polish, but, that wouldn't do! Dotty's words echoed in her mind: "Remember, don't speak in Polish to the other children. They won't understand you, and it's.. eh, how you say? Lekceważący, to speak so they can't understand you." Dotty had taught her how to write her American name, as they called it, but she was so panicked by this point that she couldn't remember how.

message 30: by Astig0921 (new)

Astig0921 Will looked up at his class for a bread moment to see how they were doing. When he noticed a concerned look on one of his students faces. He placed his book down on his desk and got up an slowly walked over to her. "Hello, I do not think I have seen you around here before I am Mr. Baker. What is your name?" He asked kindly and friendly while also keeping a smile on his face.

message 31: by Belladonna (~Miriam Daisy Rose~) (last edited May 07, 2013 03:57PM) (new)

Belladonna (~Miriam Daisy Rose~) (miriamdaisyrose) | 25 comments She looked up at him like a deer caught in headlights. Flustered, her polish accent laid thick upon her words, which she messed up. "Mye nam is Wera- W-W-Wilma." And here her words need a little back-story explanation:
When she and her siblings, including her older sister Dotty, had moved to America, Dotty Americanized the spellings of her two brothers' names. And, for personal and practical reasons, she had decided to change her own (previously being Ruta). Wilma's name was Wera, and seeing her 14-years-older sister changing her name, she had wanted to change hers too, especially since Wera was a decidedly not-American name. Dotty had been dubious, but allowed her to, provided that that was what she really wanted to call herself. And, she made it clear that if Wilma (Wera) ever wanted to change her name back, she could. Hence, this is why now Wilma is getting her own name mixed up.

message 32: by Astig0921 (new)

Astig0921 He smiled, "Wilma.. That is a Beautiful name. Well it is pleasure to meet you. And where ever that you are from it is our pleasure to have you here in our class. I hope that you like it here." He looked down at her paper an noticed she hadn't written anything on her paper yet. He looked back up at her scared face an smiled. He whispered to her so that only she could hear, "If you need help writing an speaking English, Stay after school." He smiled looked at the class to make all of the other kids go back to their papers, Stood up an walked back to his seat where apollo went from desk to desk purring up a storm while allowing the children to pet him.

Belladonna (~Miriam Daisy Rose~) (miriamdaisyrose) | 25 comments His kindness made her smile with the big cute smile of a little child. The teacher knew she couldn't write, and he wasn't mad at her. In fact, he wanted to help her! Feeling empowered, she quickly hunched over her paper, pretending to write on it so that the other kids would think that she could. However, due to her family's frugal way of life, she did not make any marks on it so as not to waste it. When she felt she was sufficiently finished for her charade, she put the pencil on the table and flipped the paper up-side down like she had seen some other kids do. She watched the cat move about. Yes, she decided that she liked her new teacher.

message 34: by Astig0921 (new)

Astig0921 Will smiled satisfied that he could help children and see that he actually could influence them. After all the kids were finished an the bell had rung for lunch and recess her collected everyone papers. He noticed that even though she had acted like she had written things. she had really written nothing at all. this amazed him greatly. He went through all the papers taking tips in each child to get to know how to teach each and everyone of them.

Belladonna (~Miriam Daisy Rose~) (miriamdaisyrose) | 25 comments It was lunch time. All the kids began to spill out of the building, most going home to eat lunch, some to play outside the school building. An hour and a half until school was back in session, and Wilma had no clue what to do.
It hadn't even occurred to her that lunch would be something she would have to contend with. And she began, yet again, to panic. She sat on the steps uncomfortably. Mostly only boys older than herself had stayed back- to play baseball. Her fingers must have become very interesting, because she stared down at them, examining them, for a whole five minutes.
"Hey Wilma!" Dotty's voice was perky and pleasant as usual. Dotty was a bright, young person, and her hair bounced a little as she walked. Dotty was the kind of person who was always ready with a smile, even if she herself were to be on the verge of tears. Wilma looked up and saw Dotty, who was artlessly clambering her pregnant body into a sitting position on the steps beside her, and instantly was washed over with a wave of relief. With Dotty sitting here beside her, she was safe.
Dotty had come baring a picnic basket on one arm, the two younger boys trailing with her. Somewhere along the line, the boys had taken their shoes off- which weren't really theirs and they weren't used to wearing- so that now they ran around barefoot. Dotty's plan had been to get to school, get Wilma, and take them to the park to have a picnic lunch (thus giving Wilma a break away from her day at school which she knew would be stressful for her), but right now was definitely a time for sitting on school porches- because the walk had obviously tired Dotty out. She put her hands on the step behind her and stretched out her back and sat with her legs somewhat spread apart rather than crossed in a ladylike manner as decorum dictated they should have been (though there really should be exceptions for people who are simply too pregnant to care about such things), and the two little boys climbed up onto the steps and sat as well. Dotty leaned forward and folded her hands together, letting them hang down as her elbows rested on her knees. The wedding ring, which she hadn't been able to take off though her husband had died some months ago, gleamed a little in the sunlight.
Though Dotty had poor English, there was always something about how she said things, or her expressions as she did, that if one noticed, gave the feeling that she was really a rather bright, intelligent, understanding, sensible individual. And whenever she spoke to the children, there was always a respect for them in her voice, a caring, that many adults and parents simply don't have for kids. Wilma's two little brother's were the picture of caring as the listen to the conversation. "How vas your morn-ning?" Dotty's voice was pleasant and gentle.
Wilma shrugged her shoulders. "It okay."
"Ahh..." Dotty nodded knowingly. "You did meet any friends?"
Wilma nodded. "Molly gave me a cookie her momma maked. She is wreally nice."
"Dat es good." Dotty assured her. Suddenly something occurred to Wilma, and she tugged at Dotty's sleeve.
"Could please you make Kolaczkis for take to share to tomorrow?"
Dotty always understood whatever her little charges said, no matter how badly said it was, in Polish or English. She smiled. "I vould lof to, moja zabko!" (moja zabko is a term of endearment. literally it means my froggy, but that's a good thing. Like honey or sweetheart or pumpkin.)
