Still one of my favorite books in the Vorkosigan Saga. Bujold's ability in writing such an interesting and fun protagonist really becomes apparent in this novel and hooks you into wanting to continue the series just to find out what Miles Vorkosigan does next. Endearing character is an understatement, beloved seems to fit better.
I think you'll be okay. I love the romance in some of the books. But as I recall, this one is just plain fun!As a side not, Packi, the romance is not that heavy. At least not in the first books. Do you think the romance in Star Wars is too much? It's at that level. And, in the Vorkosigan books, it's not heavy at all - at least in the early ones.
All I remember from Star Wars is:Princess Leia: I love you.
Han Solo: I know.
If that’s all, I can live with it. ;)
Packi, I read the series mostly in publication order and was never really confused. Winterfair Gifts was the only book in the series that I can remember focusing on the romance elements.
Packi, I think I read somewhere that The Warrior's Apprentice is the best entry book for the series for those not into the romance thing. When I first started reading the series, I read the books all out of order, and I still loved them.
I haven't read all of them. But I have read up to Cetaganda - and not once have I felt the romance was that big a deal. Of course, I like romance in my books. I actually wished there were more books featuring Miles' parents and their romance.
book was good but before i did listen to Shards of Honour and i like that book more and for me that book is the best to start series

Book 4 of the Vorkosigan Saga, The Warrior's Apprentice by master storyteller Lois McMaster Bujold is one of our July group reads.
"Discharged from the Barrayan Military Academy, Miles Vorkosigan chances on a jumpship with a rebellious pilot and arranges to take over the ship. Events escalate from there, and soon Miles is commander of a mercenary fleet and reinvents himself as Admiral Naismith of the Dendarii Mercenary Army..."
