A group of children bought candy from a magical shop, which gave them daydreams of possible futures. One boy got that strip of candy buttons and hit all the characters in the rhyme above. Another had a sugar airplane, and dreamed of flying.

D.M. Dutcher  | 339 comments I think it might be Penny Candy by Edward Fenton. Hard to find reviews, but a fragment from a library journal reads:

"Paul himself chooses candy buttons, each of which transports him into a
different world according to the count-out rhyme schemes of "rich man, poor man.
In his fantasies, Paul is usually the benefactor or Walter Mitty; after candy
and ..."
