When they're led to Ember by Dint, they're attacked by animals and creatures, such as a the burning red giant man & the monkeys. But when they get to Ember & the Beast appears, he says that Dint was under his control & leading them to him. If the Beast is in control &wanted the group to be lead to him, why did all those creatures attack them? Were they part of Ember's rebellion army? the Beast's army? Their own?
Is this something that I need to read the second and third books to understand? This bugged me as it seemed to make no sense.

From my perspective, the "big bad" was railroading them to him all along. Up to and including getting the button to the crew.
