Do you see any similarities between the two characters?
Major differences?

Caz begins his life with all the advantages, and gets deprived of all of them along the road. Miles begins his life with all the odds against him, and earns everything there is to earn along the road. That would be the difference.
For them both, the real starting point was when they lost everything, down to their very core. Miles started really to grow in Memory, and at that point he was actually very much like Caz in the beginning of Curse of Chalion.
Both of them have also very noble personalities.

For me the thing the two had most in common was their ability to instill loyalty.

Perhaps too is their ability to help people believe in themselves.....

Phoenixfalls | 69 comments Well, one obvious difference is that Cazaril didn't have Miles' hyperactivity and manic-depression. . .

Both are physically non-standard for their genres; Miles is short and fragile as opposed to the standard space opera muscle-bound hero, and Caz is old and scarred as opposed to the standard epic fantasy youth (usually also muscle-bound). As a result, both are given to finding solutions that involve talking rather than fighting. . .

And more than their ability to instill loyalty, I was struck by their tremendous personal loyalty to their rulers. Neither Miles nor Caz ever even considered doing anything but obeying their emperor/queen, despite hefty temptation to do so (temptation in the form of wealth/power/the idea that they know better what is right). Their integrity, in other words. A trait Aral and Cordelia also share.

Aileen | 143 comments Cazaril is so calm. At least, that's how I read him. Even when he has a demon and his first enemy residing in his stomach... How does Bujold make that so believable?
Miles is.... not calm.

Miles would probably poke out the demon through his navel.
Oooh, the mental image...
