Aha. I thought it was just me reading too much into Gaiman and McKeen - so glad someone has confirmed it for me. I did a double take when reading, and thought: where have I heard those names before!

Later in the book he sort of explains that. (view spoiler)[He says the soliders from the Ghost Brigades are named after famous scientists and philosophers. Like Jane is named after Carl Sagan so I'd say it'd be the same for Gaiman and McKean and Watson. (hide spoiler)]

Watson is probably a reference to James D. Watson, who with Francis Crick is credited with the discovery of the structure of DNA. Having read Ghost Brigade, the surnames of Gaiman and McKean are very interesting. Not all special forces are necessarily named after philosophers and scientists.

Only Gaiman and McKean were in Perry's original platoon, not the Ghost Brigade.

Yes! So glad I wasn't the only one to catch that...I laughed out loud and I think I said something like "really?!" A very clever nod to the dynamic duo of the fantasy world.
