This book is due to be published in April. Nancy Bachrach is a member of this book group and has requested us to read an excerpt and comment on it.
(See Message #2 at: ====> http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1... )

I've read the excerpt and I think we have a star among us. I was riveted from the first sentence. I liked the style. The hook was in.

See what you think. See the links below:

Good luck, Nancy!

PS-The website said: "No part of this excerpt may be reproduced or reprinted without permission in writing from the publisher." Otherwise I would quote your sentence about the "truth" and tidiness. I love that sentence!

PPS-Your book is on my To-Read Shelf.

Thanks, Nancy. I'll wait until the book is published. Then I'll post some favorite quotes from it. I think the publisher will allow that after publication.

We quote everyone at alt.quotations. (g) ====>

I might even quote you there! LOL

I think it's great that you're being published by Alfred A. Knopf!

Nina | 5016 comments Speaking of being published(nothing as impressive as Knopf) when I was spending my first Thanksgiving away from home;I was attending college in CA, I was so homesick I wrote to my parents because it was Thanksgiving and thanked them for being my parents..My mother called the Kansas City Star newspaper and asked if they would like to print part of a letter they received rather than strikes, war, unemployment etc. They put it on the front page and were we all surprised and I was thrilled, I have to say..nina my first publication. There were many years in between that and the second one.

Nina, it's always a thrill to know that someone somewhere thinks our writing is worthy of publishing. I've read that most successful writers have had mentors along the way who encouraged them and somehow gave them the strength to continue in their goal. It sounds as if your parents were your mentors.

There was a man who liked my light nautical poems years ago. He always pushed me to write another, even when I said I had no more ideas. Sure enough, I'd get another idea! Eventually one of those poems got into the National Power Squadron Magazine. It's at: ====>
http://www.goodreads.com/story/show/3...

It's not great, but it's fun. I had fun writing the poems. They say that most writers and artists do it for themselves, because they enjoy it. A true writer can't restrain himself from writing.

Nina, you must be a true writer.

Nina | 5016 comments This is about a friend I had who has since died as she was old when she told me this story of her adventures as a waitress at a resort at Lake W...saukee. I don't know if you remember the Marx Brothers in movies??? Well, they were staying at the resort and got to know her and her sister..By the time they were to leave Harpo(who I thought couldn't speak) had asked her sister to marry him..nina

Joy H. (JoyofGlensFalls) | 15587 comments Nina, yes I remember the Marx Brothers. :) I wonder if the sister said "yes" to Harpo.

We boated on Lake Winnepesaukee back in 1973, trailering our 21' boat to NH from NY. We camped on Bear Island with another couple who also trailered their boat to NH. We cruised around the lake, pulling in at the various town on the lake.

Bear Island island was wooded and had a community beach. The campsites weren't private, as they are on the islands of Lake George. The campsites on the Lake George islands are all lakefront and each one has its own dock and separate camping area.

When we're out on those LG islands we feel remote from the hubbub of civilization. It's so peaceful.

I don't know what this has to do with Nancy Bachrach's book _The Center of the Universe A Memoir_, but we might as well bide our time until publication time in April. :)

Aren't tangents wonderful!

You know how we seem to have things in commom, starting with my granddaughter, having the same name as you. Well, we were never on Lake George, unfortunately, but we did have a 21 ft sailboat, named Allegra(means JOY in Spanish) and we did cruise on Lake of the Ozarks with it and other lakes nearby and sometimes slept on it..We trailered it to TX one time and stayed near the Gulf on Padre Island. Our motel had a dock right outside our room. We would get groceries the night before we left for the day and then come back at night. Lots of fun. At that time our youngest daughter was eleven and she loved to sail. We live about nine hundred miles from Padre Island but our son was living in Houston at that time so we stopped there first. We also sailed briefly one afternoon off the CA coast. At one time my husband wanted to sail around the world but that's another story...We also sailed on Biscayne Bay in FL and it was the first time my husband had used a wheel rather than a rudder and it was pretty exciting with all the huge boats he had to miss...nina

Ah, so you have a sailing background, Nina. I see you've done quite a bit of sailing. Sometimes our son takes us out on his sailboat and I always enjoy it because it's so quiet and peaceful.

Years ago we bought a small 11' Alcort minifish and that's what our son learned to sail on. That's where he got is love of sailing. He lived on his 35' sailboat for many years, sailing the Atlantic from the Caribbean to Nova Scotia.

Here is a pic of our son's sailboat when he was in the Bahamas:

I think I've already posted the link of our sail with him in NY harbor, but I'll post it again. See it below: ====>

I wish I could see some pics of your sailing experiences, Nina. I like the name Allegra. Very pretty.

And yes, we have a lot in common, not the least of which is the fact that my grandchildren call me "Nina". (g)

Our first sailboat was a 13 ft. Flying Dutchman Junior, from the Netherlands sailing class. It's name was Molly Brown and yes, she was unsinkable..nina

Nina, is the pic in digital form or is it a hard copy? If it's in digital form, you can send it to me by email and I will post a link to it.

OK, Nina. My husband does our scanning too. :) He scanned about 1500 of our slides, recapturing all the wonderful times we had as a family and also the times his folks had years before that. Looking back at old photos certainly gives us a perspective on life... and reminds us how fast time passes.

I'm always reminded of Thornton Wilder's _Our Town A Play in Three Acts_, the play which suggests that we should cherish every ordinary moment because, in the end, they aren't ordinary at all, but special pieces of the fabric which shapes our lives.
