Sasha (shiku) | 4 comments Okay, sorry, I was in a hurry and didn't read it. Though I'm slightly confused now - are we to make an entirely new edition with the same data and just another cover? Isn't that a little bit useless as the old cover isn't used any longer?

The old cover is used on the shelves of all the Goodreads members who have shelved it and don't want a random, unknown, new cover appearing in its place.

An alternate cover edition is described in the librarian manual which all librarians have read. Haven't they? It is "an entirely new edition with the same data and just another cover" but without the ISBN or ASIN. You also need to add a proper librarian note giving the ISBN that it is (not) using.

Sasha (shiku) | 4 comments The alternate-cover edition is there now; I think and hope it's all done correctly. ;)

Julia (mandamund) | 9 comments Phew, I had no idea, but thank you very much. It does make sense now ^^"

Looks perfect. You, and all librarians & authors, do need to be aware that changing existing covers is a Bad Thing. It is one of the fastest ways to lose your librarian status or to lose Goodreads Author status.

As long as you remember that Goodreads is a READER site rather than a SELLING site it makes very good sense. You can make your new cover the primary/default edition by clicking the option on the right-hand side of the book edit page. People can still shelve the one they want but the new one will be the first one they see.

Do you have the cover on a non-bookseller site? We are not allowed to use seller sites and I can't see the cover anywhere else.

Debbie's Spurts (D.A.) If you want to make the alternate cover edition the one featured on your author page and showing to members when browsing and searching—get directions at the author FAQ #4 this group at http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1... or help screens at http://www.goodreads.com/help/show/31... .

As Banjomike says, goodreads has a book data page with any and all published editions in or out of print. Bookseller sites like amazon, Barnes and Noble, etc. have book product pages that want the up-to-date covers and only product currently for sale. Zero concern about what is or is not for sale at goodreads. Overwriting an existing book would be like a traditional hardcopy publisher breaking into the homes of readers who purchased and physically taking the copy off their wooden bookcase because they are putting out a reprint with a new cover; once a published book is on goodreads, ebook or hardcopy, and members might put on their goodreads shelves, it gets to stay there even if updated 50 times.

Debbie's Spurts (D.A.) Really am working on; goodreads is crawling s-l-o-w-l-y.

Debbie's Spurts (D.A.) 17 is done.

New/alternate cover edition for Timeless is at http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/17...

10 lessons... cover is at http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/17...

(you as author can click on each and "edit details" to set as primary edition if that's the cover you want featured/primary/default).
