librarian4Him02 | 261 comments In 2012, I made fifty books by the skin of my teeth. I got sidetracked from my "to read" list by a 1,000+ page book. So starting January 1, I'm getting back to my "to read" list.

Looking forward to another exciting year of discovering great reads.

Good luck on your challenges, everyone!

Juli

Good luck with tackling your to-read list, Juli! Those sidetrack books can be mighty tempting, can't they? :)

Susan (chlokara) | 846 comments Good luck in 2013, Juli. IMHO, I think that extra long books should count as several books; it's only fair.

librarian4Him02 | 261 comments Thanks Susan and Tiffany.

I hope you both have an exciting year if reading in 2013.

And the book that has the privilege of being the first I completed in 2013 is...

1) The Elusive Mrs. Pollifax - Dorothy Gilman

4 stars - Collection of essays on creating and maintaining a godly marriage by well-known speakers

3) Pursuit of Justice - DiAnn Mills

1/14-1/24
4 stars - Refreshingly honest autobiography

librarian4Him02 | 261 comments Couldn't get through:

1) In the President's Secret Service - Ronald Kessler I realize the men who have been the leaders of our country led far from stellar lives. However, what I read of this book was less about working as a secret service agent and was more about seeing how much lewd gossip they could spill.

Don't think I'll be giving this one a second chance.

2) Redeeming Waters - Vanessa Davis Griggs - I'm sure it's a good book, which others have enjoyed. I couldn't get into her writing style. Though, I may try it again in future.

9) The Autobiography of Mrs. Tom Thumb - Melanie Benjamin
2/12-3/2
424 pages
5 stars - Fictionalized account of the life of Vinnie Stratton a performer for P.T. Barnum. Engaging story told in first person point of view set in mid-ninteenth century America. Exciting times for America.

10) The Enemy Within - Kris Lundgaard
7/15/12-3/12/13
157 pages
4 stars - Read for a group Bible Study. Learned a lot which helped me grow in my walk with Christ.

11) Life: an Exploded Diagram - Mal Peet
3/6-3/30
387 pages
5 stars - Unexpected shifts in point of view and large amount of back story almost made me stop reading. Once I got into the rhythm of the story, I had to know what would happen next. A powerful read.

I've been slowing down my reading on purpose. For one thing, I gave up audio books for Lent. Also, I found I was racing through books and not really taking time to enjoy them. So, my numbers might come out lower than in past years, but I'm okay with that :)

On to the April count:

12) The Book of Fairy Poetry - Michael Hague
3/30-4/2
156 pages
4 stars - Whimsical and beautiful illustrations accompany a varied selection of fairy-themed poems.

13) School for the Insanely Gifted - Dan Elish
4/3-4/13
291 pages
3 stars - It will definitely appeal to fans of quirky science fiction plots and mysteries. Overall, not a bad read. It was a nice break from the heavier-themed books I've been reading lately.

14) The Yada Yada Prayer Group - Neta Jackson
4/3-4/20
9 discs, 9 hours
3 stars - A realistic story full of laughter mixed with times of hardship. Through it all the loyalty of true friendship shines brightly.

15) With the Might of Angels (A Dear America Book) - Andrea Davis Pinkney
4/16-4/22
333 pages
5 stars - The author uses her research and family experiences to create the main character's world. I came away with a better sense of the racial tensions of the time.

16) Flesh and Blood So Cheap - Albert Marrin
4/23-4/30
182 pages
4 stars - Triangle Shirtwaist Company fire, history of New York's garment industry, and the current state of the garment industry in general. Well-written and interesting read.

17) Mrs. Pollifax on the China Station - Dorothy Gilman
4/22-5/13
7 sound discs, 7.25 hours
4 stars - Mrs. Pollifax is sent to China on another adventure where not one, but two lives are in her hand.

Oh, no! You gave books (well, a type of books) for Lent?? I hear little audiobooks all across America crying. :) What made you decide to give up audiobooks?

I found I was racing through books and not really taking time to enjoy them.

That is definitely one bad thing about having a goal (a specific number of books or pages to read, or a pile you want to clear, or whatever)--you get so focused on achieving the goal that you don't have time to enjoy *getting to* the goal. You don't stop to enjoy the journey. I have that same problem.

I realized that over the past few months I'd been giving books and reading a higher priority than my Christian walk. During Lent I took time to realign and reassess my priorities.
