Lynnm | 923 comments There are a lot of great videos on youtube and other sites about the environment or on topics related to the environment.

Feel free to post any videos you find that you think members would enjoy. Again, they can be on the environment, but also on science, even philosophy.

Lynnm | 923 comments I love science...even though it wasn't always my best subject in college. I especially love reading about space.

This is a wonderful lecture by British physicist (and former pop music singer) Brian Cox on the creation of the universe.

Lynnm | 923 comments An asteroid is going to come between earth and the moon in February. Nothing scary though...

Lynnm | 923 comments Did anyone here ever read Carl Honore's "In Praise of Slowness"? Honore explores how to slow down, not only to help the environment, but to help us individually: everything from the Slow Food Movement to education to family life.

Here is a nice overview from his 20 minutes lecture for a TED Talk:

Some day, I would love to have the group read his book. Very relevant to every day living.

Lynnm | 923 comments I posted the word to Carl Sagan's Pale Blue Dot on the Green Quotes thread, but here is a good video that someone created based on the words:

Lynnm | 923 comments Very cool - A wonderful celebration of earth in music.

This is a video of composer Eric Whitacre at a TED conference. He wrote a choir piece called Cloudburst with words by poet Octavio Paz after being caught in a cloudburst. He combines the performance with live singers and virtual singers using Skype.

Lynnm | 923 comments I've had this song in my head for the last week - Counting Crows "Big Yellow Taxi". Video with song and someone's interpretation of the lyrics:

Lynnm | 923 comments Good video from moveon.org - Is There Anything More Beautiful Than This? And great tribute to those who lost their lives battling for the environment.

Some very short clips are embedded in journalism now. For instance, did you see that the Rift Valley developed a rift recently? This is due to continental drift.

Here's one from Nat Geo on developing trees to reforest Iceland in a time of climate change.

Breathtaking scenery as well. Nat Geo does such a great job in so many areas that support environmental causes!

Nat Geo again - this one is a ranch on Texas limestone that was wasteland because there was no water. A gentleman who had worked hard for his money bought the worst land he could buy and, very simply, restored it to beauty and a haven for nature.
Bamberger Ranch.

Nat Geo - replanting redwood forests further north, where it is cooler.

Some great scenes and we learn about genetics and propagation.

Curlews need a lot of help if they are not going to disappear in this generation of birds. Ireland is now down to about 120 breeding pairs.

Preserving the Irish bog habitat and making the nests safe is shown in this two-minute film on Youtube. Go watch, and please give it a Like.

Thanks Jimmy! I have been supporting the Irish Peatlands Conservation Council for many years. This didn't cost me anything because they take used postage stamps and sell them.

I've had a recommendation for this one. Morocco, which is on the west cast of North Africa, could in theory generate enough power for 7 million homes through wind, solar and wave energy. The film suggests this could be piped to Europe, specifically we are shown the south tip of UK is in a line above the further west point.
Of course, those folks in Africa's wider community might think the power should be distributed around Africa.

14 mins but you can skip ahead to visuals if you don't have much time.

The Irish efforts to support broadcasting about climate change have stepped up a little.

https://www.rte.ie/news/ireland/2022/...

"Significant new funding for climate change broadcasting projects for TV and radio has been announced by Ministers Eamon Ryan and Catherine Martin.

It follows a commitment in the Climate Action Plan published last year to support the development of media content that raises awareness of climate change and promote action and behavioural change to combat it.

A total of €5 million is being provided specifically for climate broadcasting with half of the money coming from the Department of Environment, Climate Change and Environment, and half from the Department Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sports and Media.

Green Party Leader Eamon Ryan said that he does not think this will be a once-off round of funding for climate coverage, but that the Government needs to see how it works, test it, and try it out to make sure that it is the right model to support climate broadcasting."
