MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 7282 comments January 2013 Group Read Nominations

Just as a recap:

Two discussion leaders per book

From now on the person(s) who nominates winning book(s) of the month will co-lead the discussion of the book with the moderator.

This does mean a few things:

1. If you aren't really interested in reading a book, don't nominate it!
2. If you doubt that you'll have time to participate in that month's discussion, don't nominate it!

Now, don't feel stressed...you still don't have to go it alone. Moderators will always be active leaders in book discussions, too.

Don't forget! In order for your nomination to count you must link the book.

Nominations close Monday, December 17th.

Nyssa | 134 comments I would like to nominate Among Others by Jo Walton Among Others for the "Urban Fantasy" selection.

I saw it as an "upcoming read" for another group. Not something I would normally pick for myself, the storytelling style (part diary, part bibliography - according to some of the reviews) sounds just quirky enough to be interesting.

carol. | 2616 comments i heartily second and third. It's on my TBR short list. It's a Hugo and Nebula winner.

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 7282 comments I'd like to nominate Geekomancy Geekomancy by Michael R. Underwood
Clerks meets Buffy the Vampire the Slayer in this original urban fantasy eBook about Geekomancers—humans that derive supernatural powers from pop culture.

Ree Reyes’s life was easier when all she had to worry about was scraping together tips from her gig as a barista and comicshop slave to pursue her ambitions as a screenwriter.

When a scruffy-looking guy storms into the shop looking for a comic like his life depends on it, Ree writes it off as just another day in the land of the geeks. Until a gigantic “BOOM!” echoes from the alley a minute later, and Ree follows the rabbit hole down into her town’s magical flip-side. Here, astral cowboy hackers fight trolls, rubber-suited werewolves, and elegant Gothic Lolita witches while wielding nostalgia-powered props.

Ree joins Eastwood (aka Scruffy Guy), investigating a mysterious string of teen suicides as she tries to recover from her own drag-your-heart-through-jagged-glass breakup. But as she digs deeper, Ree discovers Eastwood may not be the knight-in-cardboard armor she thought. Will Ree be able to stop the suicides, save Eastwood from himself, and somehow keep her job?

I've been reading it (at 60%) and so far it's uber Geeky and fun!

Nyssa | 134 comments Annnd...just like that, Mrs. J may have just blown my nomination out of the water! Geekomancy looks like tons of fun.

******
Problem solved. Among Others for book club and Geekomancy regardless!!

carol. | 2616 comments ebook only, bad girl!

Speaking of, I can't find Geist locally. Looked around yesterday, not at B&N, not at used bookstore, and not in 52 member library system. Yikes! I'm trying not to buy anymore unless they are vetted first.

Crap. I could let you borrow my copy. Snail Mail. O_o

Ooh, shoot! Really??

Dang it...

message 10: by carol. , Senor Crabbypants (new)

carol. | 2616 comments Well. If low interest and everyone reads, you can read without me.

I really need to get an ereader--for travel if nothing else.

message 11: by Nyssa, Don't make me get the ruler! (new)

Nyssa | 134 comments I take it print copy availability is part of the rules?

Oh, and while I'm thinking about it...

I don't have one now, but if I did have an "Epic Fantasy" nomination, could I have summited it as well, or is it one nomination per person, period?

message 12: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, *good karma* (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 7282 comments So, I just shot Mr. eBook only an email to see if he has print copies. Well, more like I left a comment on his website! (Not quite the same, eh? lol!)

So, I guess I can look for a different book in the meantime. Something with print copies.

*nods*

I'm a 50/50 girl myself. And a multiple redundancy girl, too. Sometimes you just have to have the same book in multiple formats.

>.>

<.<

I only have one or two books in print, ebook and audio.

But I have tons in both ebook and print! Who says you can't have it all.

We have quite a few members who don't read ebooks at ll.

Yes, yes, yes! I love my Kindle 3 and may be getting a Kindle paper white for or after Christmas. I haven't abandoned paper completely, but I love being able to take an entire library with me wherever I go, plus it takes up so much less space. The downsides are not being able to lend books to others easily and/nor being able to donate books to school libraries in need.

You know I want to... *cries*

...I need to talk to Chrisa to see how her T2 is doing? Any major bugs being bitched about at MR? I've been thinking of getting a new T2 but the KPW is hot (but $139 w/o SO) and the regular k3 is only $90. The T2 is $130 off the bat.

Does your K3 have SO?

message 18: by Nyssa, Don't make me get the ruler! (last edited Dec 13, 2012 09:36AM) (new)

Nyssa | 134 comments MrsJoseph wrote: "Does your K3 have SO? "

Yes, but that's because I "added" it, and can remove it anytime at no cost.

Not sure if I would buy the Paper White without ad support, as the ads really don't bother me at all - I rarely see them.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 5387 comments I will probably have to break down and buy an E reader. I've had Geekomancy suggested several times, but can't find it in any other form.

Maybe Santa will bring me one??????

At $5 and change, I couldn't resist!

I'd still like to read Among Others for the month, though. I'll wait to see if wins, as it is $9.99 for the Kindle edition.

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 7282 comments Ok, so I haven't heard back from the author and I can't find a print format for the book.

I'd like to nominate Shadow Blade Shadow Blade (Shadowchasers, #1) by Seressia Glass
For Kira Solomon, normal was never an option.

Kira’s day job as an antiquities expert, but her true calling is as a Shadowchaser. Trained from youth to be one of the most lethal Chasers in existence, Kira serves the Gilead Commission dispatching the Fallen who sow discord and chaos. Of course, sometimes Gilead bureaucracy is as much a thorn in her side as anything the Fallen can muster against her. Right now, though, she’s got a bigger problem. Someone is turning the city of Atlanta upside-down in search of a four-millennia-old Egyptian dagger that just happens to have fallen into Kira’s hands.

Then there’s Khefar, the dagger’s true owner-a near-immortal 4000-year-old Nubian warrior who, Kira has to admit. looks pretty fine for his age. Joining forces is the only way to keep the weapon safe from the sinister Shadow force, but now Kira is in deep with someone who holds more secrets than she does, the one person who knows just how treacherous this fight is. Because every step closer to destroying the enemy is a step closer to losing herself to Shadow forever. . . .

I read the beginning of your review for this, stopping so as not to stumble on any spoilers. In it you say: And there are POC characters!

What does POC mean?

Do you have a smart phone? You can download apps that let you buy/read ebooks. Not the easiest on the eyes though...

Michael Underwood | 6 comments Hello all, this is Michael R. Underwood, author of Geekomancy.

Sadly, Geekomancy is only available as an ebook at the moment (though an audiobook edition should be coming in 2013 as well). Thanks to everyone who recommended the book for the group, and I hope those who chooses to read it on their own enjoy the novel.

Cheers,
Mike

Thank you for letting us know, "in person".

I look forward to reading Geekomancy!!

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 5387 comments Thanks, I'm a big fan of audio reads as they can be "read" while other things are going on. I look forward to it.

As discussion leader for Among Others do I start the thread when I'm ready, or will one of you start the thread soon?

I plan to start reading the book next week (probably around the 6th or 7th) after I finish the book I'm reading now.
