On learning that both this book and First Love are based upon Turgenev's own life and experiences, it was difficult while reading not to compare this one to First love, particularly in the way in which the narrator in each of these stories portray their parents, and I have noticed a few similarities. Also interesting that both stories seem to portray accounts of an unrequited love. The narrators experiences with Liza within this story do seem to have a lot of common ground in with the experiences expressed in First Love.
In some ways this story also seems like something between Notes from Underground and The Death of Ivan Ilych.
