DESCRIPTION:
Every biography of Rizal has something about Josephine Bracken and her life with him. But scarcely anyone has made Josephine the focus of the research, in spite of the important role she played in the last years of Rizal’s life. Even serious biographers of Rizal have often accepted as fact the various unreliable statements found in scholarly as well as in popular accounts, with little concern about their accuracy.
This book, in contrast, centers on Josephine herself. Utilizing new sources uncovered in the course of their many years of research, the authors, Luis Lisa and Javier de Pedro, provide new insights, clarify issues, and belie popular impressions on Josephine, thereby presenting her in a clearer and better picture.
Particularly significant is the account of her early life in Hong Kong, and why it was she who came with her foster-father to Dapitan in search of Rizal’s medical expertise. Through their well-documented and thorough research, the authors have woven a fascinating story about Josephine, and consequently about Rizal and his family as well, that will interest not only historians but also ordinary readers.
